    That is annoying.

Flash provides a server-side policy file that allows servers to opt-in to provide data to scripts from other domains.

This allows Flash to default to the same security model as the browser, but also work more effectively when the data-provider knows what they're doing.

  2. My GRANDmother loves Mozilla on Mozilla Gains on Internet Explorer · · Score: 1

After slowly teaching her how to use the internet enough to get to Yahoo! Mail and forward on ponzi schemes, my Nana had it all. Then, Yahoo upgraded Mail to no longer support her config (Win95/IE4). She neither needs nor wants a new computer. She just wants to email relatives.

So, I remotely instructed my Dad to install Mozilla and set it up as her default browser, same home page and everything. Boom! Back in business. Firefox, wisely, doesn't support Win95, but I sure am glad Mozilla does.

  3. Joysticks!?! on The Future of Cars According to Toyota · · Score: 2, Insightful

What's with all the talk of joysticks in next-gen concept cars? A normal steering wheel gives great flexibility: great detail control, and you can still whip out a sharp turn if you need to.

Imagine a sneeze jerking you into the neighboring car.

Furthermore, how dumb is it to replace gas/brake pedals w/ another joystick!?! Now you NEED 2 hands to drive! How are you going to mess with the radio or eat your Big Mac or call your mom?

First, it's hard to imagine that AOLTimeWarner are actually our guys.

Second, all of the legitimate gripes about Microsoft abusing its power stem from the leverage their monopoly gives them. CNN is far from the only television provider of news.

Third, it still is pretty sketchy for a news station to push any sort of commercial or political agenda ( Fox->Republicans; CNN->Firebird; MSNBC->??? )

  6. Re:Look at wireless on Cable Industry Taking Control of the Net · · Score: 1

Am I the only one to see this as a huge business opportunity to small ISPs? In communities where the Cable and Phone lines are controlled by monopoly ISPs, shouldn't there be an opportunity for a fully open, wireless ISP??

Lease BW from the backbone providers and charge your subscribers a little more than you pay. Sure, it'll work best on a per-GB basis, but if the prices are low enough, that'll be fair.

Allow subscribers to configure their own upstream/downstream caps. After all, they're paying for it.

  7. Re:well well well on More on DVD-Audio and SACD · · Score: 5, Interesting

I've heard the difference, and it's remarkable.

My only friend who has a SACD player also has a $20K+ stereo (and I mean *stereo* -- no surround nonsense) with external amps, gold-tipped cables, etc... He played Brubeck's Take 5 on normal CD and on SACD for me. The change to the cymbals was unbelievable; it sounded like they were in the room.

Granted, I don't know how much amp/speaker investment is required before you can hear the difference. But if the investment is low and the price of these fancy CD-replacements drops, I'd be interested. As for copy protection, anyone who thinks new formats will prevent copying is a fool.
