"If you live in a substantially large urban area (like NY), the chance of landing a really cushy job over $6 an hour is almost nil, "
WTF are you talking about ? Every day I drive by countless MacDonalds and other fast food joints with "Help Wanted" posted all over them.
And yeah, it is "a substantially large urban area"
: Chicago.
"Just Friday I was talking to someone on the phone in Indy who said "yea, I'm meeting with some guy named Woo, guess it's a chink or jap or whatever."
"
He said chink or jap? How fucking terrible!
What are you going to do, fucking cry and call police?
Thanks to idiots like you soon people won't be able to talk to each other except in stiff official-talk.
No jokes, no borderline terms ( btw..which make live so much more interesting ) everything will be gone thanks to stiffs like you.
"Hardly any user-land software should be messing with your init scripts."
"Again, applications shouldn't be messin' with your/etc. "
True but there are specific cases where simple enumeration (read only access) is hard to implement due to differences between distros.
"Most other libraries are stable enough for binary consistency. "
Libc5 is fine but there are many cases of lesser-known libs like jpeg, which create tons of problems.
I have a program from 1998 which used certain version of jpeg. Every current distro comes with new jpeg lib completely incompatible with the older version. I don't understand why distros act like everything I will ever need comes with their precompiled apps cd ? If RedHat offered libjpeg.so.61 before, then they should keep providing this in ADDITION to new libjpeg.so.62.
Don't they realize that all software linked to 61 will stop working and people will have to either recompile or hunt for older versions of jpeg lib?
"Microsoft never fixes their architecture, no matter how badly it needs it. "
No, they do fix their stuff. It is just they maintain older interfaces in addition to new stuff. Sure it creates huge and somewhat confusing API but it provides binary compatibility for people who, we as programmers should care most, the end users.
In another words, Linux culture puts comfort of programmers above comfort of users.
Hehe, sure he is; after all he is not praising Linux is he?
"Aside from DeadHat 7's binary incompatibility (and that hasn't lasted long, it seems), releasing a program for one distro should work, or be able to work, on all, unless the company limits itself to a certain package manager format "
Bullcrap, with all distros having completely different startup scripts and just about everything in/etc with exception of some "high level" files one would be hard pressed to write anything more involved without standard Unix approach "ifdef.. "
Another thing, every distro comes with different versions of libs which makes nearly impossible to release dynamically linked apps.
"Aside from DeadHat 7's binary incompatibility (and that hasn't lasted long, it seems), releasing a program for one distro should work, or be able to work, on all, unless the company limits itself to a certain package manager format "
Compared to linux Win32 binary compatibility is a heaven.
Writing wrappers around command line programs is a recipe for disaster ( 90% of the time these end up being terrible kludges.)
BT. How the hell one writes graphical editor in GUI independent way ?
"There are already too many Linux apps hopelessly tied to a particular GUI, likely to break when the GUI undergoes the next major change (*cough* GTK). "
Careless programmers who do not give a shit at all about binary compatibility.
Look at Win32 ; it has been available for years and still 90% software will run on any version of it.
"No, programs that ran on Win95 do not always run in Win2k. So that's bull. I really haven't had a problem w/a program not being able to run under more recent Linux distros/versions (except for libc linked glquake). "
Dude, I am surprised when Win32 app does NOT run on Win2k , on the other hand I am just as surprised when older linux app RUNS on newer distributions ( unless it is completely static compile.)
You don't like this reality, well too bad but it is reality.
Yeah, but does it take into account millions of poor Mexicans and other illegal immigrants here in US ( and hundreds of thousands of them coming every year) ?
Powerty rates among white people are just as low as they ar in Sweden.
BTW. What they consider poverty rate is a joke.. but that is another story.
Why do you assume we are all going to "vote" against IP?
Just because/. editorial staff seems to be severly skewed to the left does not mean most Americans are.
"to do with us having an idiot president getting his marching orders from the religious right and big business. "
Quite a change from having an slick liar and opportunist as a president getting his orders from atheistic left and various other leftist groups (including big business like trial lawyers etc...)
As for me... hmm, I prefer what we have now.
"show that government expenditures are about 56 per cent of the GDP ?"
Half the wealth created by Swedes is in hands of few bureaucrats
What a magnificent country to live where people willingly sacrifice half of their money in hope that selected few will make all the right decisions for them. Very independent and forward thinking society.
"(although I don't condone the specific actions of Stalin, who, as we all know, wasn't a Communist so much as a Totalitarian political leech)."
No , you not gonna get out of this one that easy...
Stalin was a product of Communism and therefore can easily be included into legacy of this social system.
He and his tyranny was not what original Communism was about but all utopian systems end up being terrible caricatures of itself and great breeding ground for lunatics and mass murderers.
"? Nope, "Godless commies" (appeal to fear/ignorance). "
Fear ? True.
But ignorance? These "Godless commies" were (and in some cases still are) responsible for oceans of human misery and only idiot would call fear of them "ignorance".
Bob Jones University is a very fine school despite the fact that they put so much emphasis on religion.
If you want to get great classical education this is the place to go to.
"My cat regularly leaves her kills after taking
just a few bites. "
Well, the correct answer for this would be that your cat has been corrupted by dealing with you other humans beings.
Hehehe....
Hell, some day some green wacko will come up with theory like that...
"Nothing about "anti-humanism" was mentioned in the post; it was just a theory about extinction. "
Yes, this time was nothing there but he is right; these days it is extremely popular to point to humans as a ultimate evil responsible for everything that is wrong with our planet.
Most often we hear bunch of green activists calling for extremely significant changes in the way we live without any sort of hard scientific evidence to back their claims.
It has become very popular to pass laws and change policies simply to please some vocal groups ( California lack of energy production capacity is an example of that.)
Yes, but have you noticed how accelerated progress has become after these "novelties" were introduced?
BTW. Who are you to deny ownership of somebody else's work?
If somebody claims , I will sell you this software on CD as long as you agree not to distribute it, how in the world can you deny them the right to do so ?
Argue this to the artist. Tell them that from now on there will no protection for whatever they create. Tell them that the books they write will be protected only "for a short time."
I doubt many of them would go for that...
It is not BAD...
It is normal.

I remember reading it was more like 45% !!!

I could go recursive with your post, you realize that ?
Debt THEY have created by constantly increasing spending on various social programs.

What it is with this "you" ?
Did I "abused" you ?
If not then stop generalizing and answer the question.

How evil is to obey Ten Commandments?
