  2. what is it with AOL ? on AOL Jilts Open Source · · Score: 1

    Hey all,

Could someone please point out quite what is so good about AOL ? I work for a small internet company that is starting to get moving in the world, but in order to stop those from aol complaining we have to get an account ourselves to check out what the sites look like. It makes our lives such a hassle. Why do they have to do the micros~ and redifine the internet for their own capitalist needs ?

OK so it is a good thing that the (allegedly) simple controls are easy to use, but couldn't AOL at least *try* to explain that the internet is not owned by them ? I have read on many sites that people from AOL have attempted to report them to the "Internet Police" or the "Aol supervisors" for content which is not to their liking. For example "Joke a Day" at http://www.jokeaday.com is a site that features a free joke mailing list in which some of it's jokes are a little controversial. Some are about religian (but *all* religians are subjected to humiliation) some have rude words in. The signup letter shows clear instructions that state such jokes will be said. The guy running it has a letters page from those who write in... guess who complain the most ? Please understand that I am no way affiliated with this site... but take a look for true evidence.

So, to get to the point, AOL *PLEASE* start to get your act together and share a little. Free software is great and as such I am running Linux, but at the end of the day we all need to be fed. Therefore is it too much to ask for a decent service for these people that can point out the relevant infomation as stated above ? I am English so I don't know about elsewhere, but many ISPs websites have a brief guide to netiquette stating the simple request of being polite...

is it really too much to ask ?

    Hey all,

I personally havn't seen the advert, but going by the CNN description the bloke must be pretty stupid to do it in which cash he should be forgiven. However in recent years the stupidity of people is getting, ironically, stupid.

For example, do we really need to be told that food cooked in the microwave is going to be hot... doesn't the definitipon of cooking imply that ?

Warning : Do not use hairdryer in shower.

Warning : Do not insert fingers into blender.

How more times do we have to put up with these phrases ? Whilst I do not consider myself to be of a superior intelligence I can figure out the odd maths question and write essays... averaged school stuff you might say.

However lets assume that this man is not of the stupid variety. Instead he has maken a bit of money and thinks that he has seen a golden oppertunity to make more. How ? Sue Pepsi for non-delivery of an advertised product. Mmm it could work, couln'd it ? And it would certainly help out with the bank loan.

So perhaps the question should change from "Why do we have to put up with stupid people (that sounds nasty... sorry ;)" to "Why should the greedy, money-grabbing man make life worse for us"

Warning : Do not use hairdryer in shower, because we know if you do then you will sue us (or maybe your family... *doh*) for lots and lots of money and we won't have a leg to stand on.

I read a while back about a man who had drunk so much at a bar that he fell of his stool and broke his pelvis, also severing the bottom part of his spinal column. He was left paralysed from the waist down. However, he took the nasty, evil, money making bar landlord to court because it certainly wasn't his own fault that he had drunk too much. Oh no, the barman has in fact *forced* him to keep drinking. He tried to go but couldn't.
Ok I'm attempting to drip a little sarcasm in, but the paralysed man won the case.

What kind of a world does this mean we live in ?

I have a paid account with Demon Internet and a free one from the largest free isp, Freeserve. Sometimes Demon is faster, sometimes Freeserver, but c'est la vie.

Currently, everyone is setting up free access... even football teams...

The only problem is that here we have to pay for all our phone bills and a local call comes in at 5p/min peak, 1.5p/min off-peak... not much but if you're a heavy user it can add up.

Now, if I were Microsoft, wouldn't an 0800 advert-funded isp be the way to go ahed ? I know that no matter how fast/slow the connection, I would be willing to leave a robot downloading pages overnight...

So, a challenge for Microsoft perhaps. Give us freephone access to the internet along with a free acount and we'll start to like you more. Fair ? Well maybe we can start listening to what you say every once in a while... just maybe.

However, I for one am glad that two of the main news site (for me anyway) have picked up the story and publically denounced. What did Microsoft honestly expect ? A wave of applause and motivation from possibly the most anti-Micros~ group of people ? They chose to ignore the fact that crackers have previously ignored high-profile offers from the media, even with an incentive. Surely the whole point of cracking is for the thrill and the fun of being able to get in ? I wouldn't know, of course, but being paid for it is more likely to make it a chore.
