  1. Re:One thing's for sure: on Radiohead May Have Made $6-$10 Million on Name-Your Cost Album · · Score: 2, Interesting

    Here's some interesting numbers:

500k Albums is Gold, 1m Albums is Platinum, 2m is Multi-Platinum (double plat, triple plat, etc), 10m is Diamond.

US Sales for Radiohead look this... Pablo Honey - Platinum 1m-2m, The Bends - Gold 500-1m, OK Computer - 2 x Platinum 2m-3m, Kid A - Platinum 1m-2m, Amnesiac - Gold 500-1m, Hail to the Thief - Gold 500k-1m... For a total of ~5.5m-10m albums sold.

If they got 3$ per album sales (they wish) they'd have made ~16.5m-30m on cd sales alone.

If people paid an average of $5-$8 per album downloaded and 1m people downloaded the album that means they made almost 1/3-1/2 of their *total previous combined album sales* in a best case scenario and that doesn't include the boxed set people could have purchased. If you use realistic numbers for what the labels were paying them on each sale and use 1.2m downloads at an average of $5/ea ... they probably made more money than they made from the labels on cd sales total across the board... or at least an equal amount.

The only thing the labels provide that is actually of value is getting your stuff played enough to get you to critical mass... but they rape you doing it.

  9. Re:Ah, the police... on New Anti-Forensics Tools Thwart Police · · Score: 3, Interesting

I think you're making a big assumption there, I've worked for the government and with the police on several occasions... thus far I wouldn't consider most of them competent beyond a first year systems administrator, they have a lot of books that explain processes to them that were written by someone far more intelligent but often have to consult with someone who knows their shit to even complete the more difficult processes. If you do something that falls far outside their realm of commonly available and used encryption, knowledge, etc... you stand a fair chance of them not being able to break it *IF* you're not someone they consider a big fish. If you're someone they consider a big fish, they'll keep calling in bigger guns until they do get someone who can do whatever needs done to get into your data. Keep a nice sized tub of thermite on top of your pc that runs the full length with a magnesium strip in it and connect it to something that can ignite it... if you see them coming and can ignite it before they get to you, there won't be a pc and potentially a standing room by the time it finishes burning out... shy that, if they got undamaged physical hardware... they can get the data eventually if you're important enough.

  11. Albums on Record Labels Struggle With the Album's Demise · · Score: 1

The problem with albums are... 90% of the music sucks. Because a band puts out 1 good song I like doesn't mean I'm willing to pay 20$ for the cd to get 1 good song and 14 that blow donkey balls. I'll just pay for my one song thanks... hell that was exactly why I bought singles tapes in the 80s.

There are a few exceptional albums that are an exception to the rule, but mostly... even the best of bands, have trouble putting out 15 tracks that most everyone is going to like. Hell even 5 tracks.

  12. It depends on the company... on Google Perks Are Great, But They All Mean Business · · Score: 1

... In some cases I integrate, in others I segment.

There have been jobs I've had where I slept at work and there have been jobs I've had where I left everyday at 5pm and not a second later.

A lot of what determines that is how I feel about my job, if I'm happy and feel the company appreciates me for my contributions, I'll integrate and give my all. If I'm unhappy and feel they're basically out to screw me and don't care about me then I segregate... I think most people are that way.

To answer the question above though, yes, most google employees would be integrators... but thats because integrators are made by having a good work place, segregators are made by having a bad work place. Previous experiences can also flavor that quite a bit, if you keep getting screwed at work why give them more than the minimum if they seem like every other job?

The honest truth of it is... unless you have a stellar launch line up of titles all first year consoles suck.

That being said the Wii is doing pretty fairly, it's STILL sold out completely where I live (Canton, OH)... Still can't find peripherals and some of the more popular games are hit and miss. Many of the Wii games have great party replay value also-- much like PS2 Guitar Hero, DDR, etc.

The PS3 is a great piece of hardware but suffers from having a crap launch lineup.

The 360 is... well the 360 its got a fair number of games but nothing that really reaches out and grabs me.

The PS2 is *still* the system of choice to have for most serious gaming if you're not into pc gaming.
