Can someone explain to me again why I have to buy another piece of hardware to compensate for flaws inherent in my computer's software? Am I missing something here?
You know, there didn't used to be a big "firewall-everything" mentality on the net... it's a shame that inferior products have convinced people that they need extra layers of frivilous security just to do what the OS ought to do on it's own.
What a dumb analogy, seriously. What if you put an unpatched windows '95 box on the internet... I bet it would ge HACKED!... but what about a windows XP box vs. a solaris 9 box?
The reason that you can put an unpatched sol2.6 box on the internet and have it be hacked is because solaris 2.6 has been out for years and there are an assload of known vulns for it. However, sun has done a lot of work on solaris and you won't find a lot of these flaws in later releases of their OS. Microsoft, OTOH....
Examples: "41 percent believe that Saddam Hussein helped plan and support the hijackers who attacked the U.S. on September 11, 2001."
"37 percent actually believe that several of the hijackers who attacked the U.S. on September 11 were Iraqis."
I'm sure that my comment is buried too deep in thread to be noticed, but I really dislike these statistics. It's much more fair to state that 37% of americans don't know who actually attacked the US on 9/11. While I'm sure many people actually believe that Iraq was behind the attacks, a question such as "Several of the hijackers who attacked the U.S. on September 11 were Iraqis" actually plants the idea in someone's head by the nature of the question. Most people, out of ignorance, will probably answer "yes".
Now, if you take that poll again with the question rephrased as "What country do you think that the majority of the 9/11 hijackers from", I think that the poll results would be much different.
I'm not defending americans here, but I think that statistics like that are misleading. I believe that the public is more ignorant than they are deliberately misinformed...
I like trailers, too... it's the ads that get me. You already pay 7$ to see the movie, so why should I have to watch limp bizkit drinking mountain dew?

Maybe the simplest reason for not going to war with China is that without Chinese goods we wouldnt have anything to fight with.
I'll keep this in mind next time I have to bash someone over the head with my keyboard.
A much better analogy here would be a live concert vs. mp3 downloads. Nonetheless, I agree with you here, and this is why it's been about 3 years since I've bought a CD. However, I DJ techno, and my appetite for buying good vinyl is hard to satisfy.
But there's a big difference here, which is that a record has physical worth to me. Sure, good vinyl costs about 10$/ea, and you only get anywhere from 1-6 songs (most dance records have about 2-4). It's well worth the money, imo, because spinning from software mp3's just doesn't match the feel of vinyl underneath your fingers, and it doesn't sound nearly the same.
Granted, not everyone's in my boat. However, most people forget that vinyl was hands down a better deal that CD's. The audio quality is (arguably) better, most of them came with full liner notes, posters, and artwork on the cover. A CD, in comparison, costs twice as much, sounds identical to mp3 rips, and you get a cheap plastic case and small, fold-out picture of the band with tiny printed lyrics (if you're lucky).
The problem with the music industry is that people have no reason to buy CD's... what do they possibly offer the consumer that they can't get on mp3? The movie industry was smart enough to realize that DVD's needed to offer some type of extra incentive for people, and the fact that DVD's have audio commentaries, extra features, and all sorts of other goodies is reason enough for me to buy them.
CD's, on the other hand, are still worthless. And they will continue to be so until the RIAA comes up with something more compelling than an 18$ plasticated version of a radio one-hit-wonder. God only knows why CD's don't have band interviews, patches/shirts, or other little goodies.
And they wonder why they're still running out of busines....
Actually, smoking a single bowl of pot is rougly equivilent to an entire pack of cigarettes. While the smoke itself may be healthier for you (depending on your definition of "healthy"), there's no doubt that it pounds your lungs much harder than tobacco.
Also, chronic pot smokers inhale differently than cigarette smokers, usually holding their hits in for several seconds to absorb more THC. This also increases the amount of tar absorbed by your lungs in no insignificant way.

I was just using flat files for my S, and it was no good! Thanks to this book, my S is now running 150% faster and I can now start working on T-Z!
Damn, I was just about to host a 1,000 person q3a tourney for a cool 50$. =/

Then again, perhaps I'm being optimistic. =)
You must live in Texas, don't you?
My, how times have changed. I graduated only 5 years ago, but I would have killed to learn reason and flash in HS. Count your blessings. =)

The article is locked. Perhaps you'd like to join Mr. Sollog in predicting the [next] end of the world event?
Yeah, it's a shame this extension barely works and uses cleartext. Oh well, until then cvs does this job just fine for me.

What are all those people doing, reading fark?
/., you insensitive clod!
We're all reading
While cool to look at
I always hated chess with
non-normal pieces
Yes, I -am- bored at work waiting for this last 30min to be done with..
Evil Dead = 100% horror, 0% comedy
Evil Dead 2 = 75% horror, 25% comedy
Army of Darkness = 75% comedy, 25% horror
Evil Dead 4 = ?
I don't like the way these numbers are shaping up..
I'm still waiting for the human-shaped robot that will lead all of the people in my office to get up off of their fat asses and exercise...
Why stop there? Google should just ban all of Microsoft's netblocks to prevent their employees from gathering useful information from them...
"Begun, this war of the corporations has!"

Kind of reminds me of the breakdown of usable vs. nonusable water on earth...
Oceans 97.24%
Icecaps, Glaciers 2.14%
Ground water 0.61%
Fresh-water lakes 0.009%
Inland seas 0.008%
Soil moisture 0.005%
Atmosphere 0.001%
Rivers 0.0001%
Total percentage of drinkable water: 1%
Guess it brings a whole new meaning to the phrase "using bandwidth like it was water". =)
This was about the least informative "informative" post I have ever read. Thank you very much for making this moment in slashdot history possible.
Love,

You aren't black by any chance, are you? ;)
Ok, -why- does this joke keep getting reposted on /., and more importantly, why does it keep getting modded +5 funny?
Am I the only one that "gets it", but doesn't think that this is funny at all?
Also not coincidentally, "Team America" sucked like a Thai hooker...
I'm just curious... what makes the octopus' eye superior to the mammilian design?
Good point. Remember kids, November 2nd is national abstinance day... no Dick, no Bush!
