Soon there will be anti-anti-anti CD copying legislation...
Somebody please think of the children!
I can just see this happening ...

Homemade Gauss Gun

Some kid will make the gauss gun,...authorities will find out about it, and claim that he was going to use it to shoot up some kids at school.. it will be taken as further evidence that Computer games (Quake) cause violence in children... yadda yadda yadda...
Yes yes.. we all create the content, and thats all great and we all benefit from it equally. However, who is providing the forum for this communication to take place? No/. no content. Someone HAS to pay for this (or ANY) site that will provide the resources for people like you and me to create and share content.
The reason we do not have blanket hatred towards those who have commited crimes against us, is quite simple. If we were to not care about their civilians, we would in fact, be as bad as them. And by becoming as savage and brutal as them, we would end up justifying the very action we feel was so unjustifiable!
So now if script kiddi3s in the US, decide to deface chinese websites, the Chinese authorities could legitimately, accuse the US of harboring Terrorists???
This will mean tons of wireless LAN hardware will have to go in the junker. This isn't a small problem, its a BIG security hole, in hardware that is being used today in thousands of homes.
Either way, when will we learn that any security measure will eventually be compromised, its only a matter of time. Using lousy encryption schemes as was the case here, will only mean that a hole in the security is found sooner rather than later.
Several years ago, I had joined up with a free email service. www.netaddress.com. A couple years ago, I tried to pay them money and get the pop3 service (I didn't mind paying them even though I could get - and did get- a free yahoo account to do the same). It was a mess, I tried 3 times to give them my credit car info, and they're servers were down and wanted me to try again later. I said "to hell with it!".
Last week, I log on, and they have posted a notice, that I must pay $50 a year else, they will shut my account. #$@#%# bastards!
Although that is my primary email account and I've given it to all my friends, I'm not going to pay them this time. Its the prinicipal of it. They know, that after having used their email service for several years, I must've given my email out to a LOT of people (its the email on my resuma as well), so now they have me cornered into paying them.
I'm sorry, but LOTS of companies use this trick. I dont like tricks. I agree, that giving a free sample to look at is great, but it is very different from giving you this illusion that its always going to be free, and then suddenly when they know you cant leave, they start charging you for it.
For example, imagine the outcry if MS started charging for hotmail...
I think it is inevitable that we will eventually have to workout a way to interoperate with the MS.NET platform.. But its a not a good thing to embrace.
If we do manage to get in workable on Linux/BSD/Solaris it will only strengthen the.NET platform at no extra cost to Microsoft. I dont think they will block the Open source effort to reverse engineer it... atleast initially.. because they want.NET to become the dominant force.
Later, however, Microsoft will make continue to make 'enhancements' to the platform that will make it harder and harder for the Open source people to keep up with. They might even pursue some kind of legal action to stop it in its tracks..
Though this may be true you are manipulating statistical data to further your own point of view. (Its okay.. everyone does that).
50% of all computers serving webpages run MS operating systems. That does not mean all that you think it means. It is a widely acknowledged fact that if you want to do the same thing with windows that you were doing with BSD, you need significantly more computing power. (Hotmail for eg.).
Also, as the study pointed out, windows is also popular for personal and small website hosting. How many hits do sites like this see?
I'm certain that if you looked at a chart of pages served. You will find that Unix based Operating systems serve the majority of webpages, simply because most major websites and universities run some kind of Unix. (MS sites being the exception).
I am not sure about real time rendering for flicks like shrek and final fantasy. But real time rendering for stuff that is less detailed is definitely here.
I've worked with Maya quite a bit, and I remember hating the way I had to wait ages for it to render my movies ( 8 hours meant that I would leave it to render over night). Now what I was working on was not cutting edge and my use of lighting and textures was quite simple. I'm pretty sure that the GeForce 3 would render something like that in real time with no problems at all.
Real time rendering is here and I'm happy that I wont have to wait a day before I can see the result of my work. This means a massive improvement in productivity and ease of use.. atleast for me.
Imagine a Beowulf cluster of those!!!.. Wait there you go! I solved the problem! When one Quantum computer is no longer enough, we link them up into clusters!! Whoopee!
* goes running to the patent office *
Windows isn't necessarily outselling Unix. He was talking about percentage growth rate. Its another example of how statistics can be used to convey the wrong meaning.
To illustrate my point . Lets look at a hypothetical situation since I dont know the exact numbers.
Microsoft Share of the market: 500,000 servers
Unix Share : 2,000,000 servers.
Now in this hypothetical situation. Microsoft could see a 100% growth and sell 500,000 servers. WOW!!
Unix could see only a 50 % growth and sell 1,000,000.
The percentage growth rate for unix is SIGNIFICANTLY smaller (half), but its is still growing MUCH faster (double) than Microsoft.
I admit these are an extreme value, but Unix does hold a significant majority in the market place (combining BSDs/Linux/ and commerical unixes). So the microsoft isn't catching up nearly as fast as J. Katz would like you to believe.
Companies look at employees as a resource, and often invest time and money in training employees for certain work. It is not suprising that they would try and 'discourage' an employee from seeking job opportunities elsewhere.
It simply depends on the point of view.

Someone has been taking that Borg Bill G. icon rather seriously...

Somebody mod this guy up, he deserves it. :)
