  1. Re:This is a Good Thing for MS on Microsoft's New Audio Format Cracked · · Score: 1
    I think I see something:
    • Microsoft is not stupid. Bullying, Vindictive, and Untruthful sure, but not stupid.
    • MP3s are very popular.
    • Microsoft will give anything to be popular. This is to benefit their shareholders. If the Microsoft player is as good as all other players, and supports many different formats, then people will use it.
Therefore, Microsoft writes up a quick and dirty tool limit the play of music, but makes it so weak that the 1% who look at this stuff are able to crack it, do. This makes Microsoft look good to the Music Industry, who see that Microsoft is rooting for them. This makes the format look good to the populace, which will add it to their list of potential playable formats, and if it runs out, will run the cracker on it, and get themselves an mp3 to view. Microsoft wins and it's shares continue to go up.

  2. Re:Make it a router on High Tech Junk · · Score: 1

Not to sound like a flame, but: I set up a complete router in one evening, ipmasq, ipchains, dhcp, web (yeah, I worked real hard to set that up), dns, sendmail, and pop (again, real hard). My method of attack was to move to the /usr/doc/HOWTO directory and read all of the information about what I wanted to do. Then, I followed the instructions, occasionally reading some man pages. It was incredibly easy (and cool). I haven't set up port forwarding, but I doubt that it is very difficult. Probably just a matter of R-ingTFM.

As an aside on this post, what would happen if you uploaded the su command from another, similar computer (read LinuxPPC, same libraries) and then executed that su command. I assume that you wouldn't be able to get root from there, because it wouldn't be set suid. How does this work? Mail me the answer, if you would. I'll forget to look back through this thread to find the answer.

  4. When I revolt on FCC considers low power FM licenses · · Score: 1

Is when I have to get a license to practise free speech. And the FCC is almost there. I don't think that a pirate station should be taken down, when there have been few or no complaints about it. Actions like these are fascist, and seem to stem from a juvenile(sp?) attitude of "if it's not mine, it is evil." There should be a side band (108-120fm) that is included on any new recievers that is under no regulation. If a parent doesn't want their child listening to it, they can install a prevento-dongle that keeps the device from sliding that far. If this happened, the FCC would step up about 3 noches in my opinion.

  5. Re:Racial issues on Feature: The Net- Boon or Nightmare? · · Score: 1
One of my biggest problems with today's society is how they continue to label a person as an "african american" or "indian american" or "anglo american". For goodness sake people, can't we get over that? When I look at a person, I don't want to see black or white or hispanic or asian, I want to see a person. Just a person who I can judge as an individual. As a good friend of mine once said "I'm not racist, I just don't like anyone" I don't want to be judged by my skin color, and I don't want life to be made easier for me because of my ancestry. I just want to be judged for who I am as a person.

And, as for the racial demographics that this article sites, I would be interested to see how many whites are in debt up to their eye-balls due to gadget purchasing. Many of the people I know live way beyond their means, without a care in the world for retirement or saving.

  8. Re:forget MUA, go MTA on Ask Slashdot: Cryptography in Mail software? · · Score: 1

Hmmm, how about a system like this: user@host1 mails user@host2. host1 contacts host2, requesting its pgp public key. host2 gives it to host1 who caches it for later use. host1 then encrypts user's message, sends them to host2, who decrypts them and hands them to the user. No need for any user intervention. problems: 1. All information is viewable at both locations, therefore any court orders can be quickly and easily followed by the sysadmins. 2. This makes brute force hacking on those public keys much more profitable. Imagine having the public key for hotmail.com. Now imagine the damage that could potentially be done with it. 3. This doesn't help with J. Random Cracker running a packet sniffer on his super duper Win9x box. He can still oWn Y0u.
