I use MDK 8.1 becuse it sets up my light-on burner w/o fight. I havent tried mdk 9 or RH 8 because I don't need to. Its all about getting the job done. I still think MDK is the best distro as long as you have a TB of HDD space....other wise I'm a big Slackware/Debian fan. But Ya gota love the fact that you get to choose!
If she can still move her hand even slightly, a simple debounced latch w/ Hall sensors detecting the change in position of the magnetic ring on her finger may be a good trigger for a buzzer & light combo. The sensors could be set in a tube so motion in any direction sets it off. If she has enough control maybe this could even be a way to code out a message.

the next set of tanks to run over students will probably be running these, in a beowolf cluster. :P
