Lots of articles have been thrown around, and in academic circles this method has long been regarded as the only possible solution. Why? Because hackers tend to be smarter than the average bear, and can get around most encryption.
I'm no fan of John Bon, but good for him. And Metallica sucks.
If it's free that you're looking for, All of Oracle's software is available free for non-commercial use from Oracle Technet.
Furthermore, since this is Slashdot, I'm pretty sure the Linux version of Oracle's DB is available free, regardless of use.
