Nope, you don't need that much space by a long shot.

When DivXing DVDs, one does not convert MPEG2 to 100's of gigs of uncompressed raw format to divx. You save yourself all that space by using a program like dvd2avi, that frameserves frames from the MPEG2 files, i.e. only compressing what you want when you want it.

I'm betting the pirates could easily go "captured movie" -to- frameserver -to- filter -to- compresser program with like 10gbs free

Sorry, but its just for identification purposes, but even if it was to ruin compression, this is why DivX, XviD, any compressor program usually has a manual setting for the minimum number of frames between I-Frames. When I was *backing up* all my dvds, I think the default is something like 10 frames, up it to 24 so at most you get an I-frame/sec. Its not gonna increase the size that much, since its variable bit rate, think of it this way, a movie with an INSANE amount of action (LOTS of I-frames) still looks good on a 2 cd DivX rip.

  6. I got a Modded Xbox and no Xbox games! on The State of the Game Console Wars · · Score: 1

Seriously, My love for the XBox has nothing to do with games. I LOVE having something that can play divx, xvid, mp3, vcd, dvd, svcd right in the family room. I used to run a cable from my computer for tv out, but it always was a pain in the ass and half the time it looked aweful. Plus, if one of my roommate's wants to watch something on the XBox, it doesn't rob me of my ability to do stuff on my computer.

Also all the emulated systems on the Xbox! Nes, Snes, Genesis, Mame, and now N64 and playstation.

Shit, most of the time I'll be playing Contra or Super Mario Brothers 3 or Sonic 2 on it, I love my old timee games.

In 10 years from now, when they have Ultra-Crazy Halo 18, I'll still be playin' my Xbox!

  7. Outsmarting the RIAA? on RIAA Obtains Subpoenas Against File Swappers · · Score: 2, Interesting

I was thinking, you share on KaZaa (over cable like rr), you get a subpoena in the mail saying the RIAA is suing you.

So you go to the store and buy a wireless router and a wireless card for your PC. Oh yeah, remember to delete all your *illegal* MP3s. Move your PC to the other side of your house to give it some distance between it and the wireless router. Now, you tell the RIAA that you've been using wireless for the last 6 months and that it wasn't you but probably somebody else using your wireless network that you keep open. Since the burden of proof is on them to prove that you *personally* downloaded it and they can't prove it, you get off free. Well, with the cost of a wireless router and hopefully just a small amount of lawyers fees.
