I have to completely agree with you. I would actually add the film's idiotic plot to the list of major
disappointments. May be as a number one disappointment.
Look at it this way: In nearly all
decent action movies the evil blokes do their best to succeed, but (if) they lose, it's because of either bad luck or good blokes' being better.
In the last episode, however, the bad bloke (senator that is) is doing his absolutely best to shoot himself in the foot (isn't he interested in
using the invasion to propel himself to power?).
Thus, it would seem, he must be interested in the safe passage for the princess to deliver the information about this invasion.
Well, as I said, he tries to shoot himself in the foot all film long, but fails, thus achieving his actual goal. Bloody brilliant!
I actually tend to think that Jar-Jar fellow is a clever invention. He manages to draw everyone's attention (just read the comments above) from the
idiocy of the plot.

If only Disney advertising people knew the difference between capital "Lambda" and "Alpha"...
