Why does it scare you so much that something tall may fall?? Yes it is going to be 22,000 miles long. But it is going to be VERY thin, very little over all mass. There is going to be a VERY small amout of mass in this compared to the world trade towers. Should they not have been built?
And,even if the cable falling was much worse then they say, WHO CARES? There are going to set it in the middle of the ocean. If, despite what the FAQ says and you are correct, it doesn't self-destruct on the way down WHAT exctaly is it going to hit? The ocean? The platform it is connected to?
It's always so sad when people don't know how to read.
Corporations,for-profit corporations, SHOULD have only one goal: To make money. That what the for-profit bit is all about. Corporations should be able to do everything they can THAT IS LEGAL to make money. Corporations are just made up of people and if the people only want to make money, that's fine.
The problem becomes when the government doesn't control the company. When the government is influenced by any one group too much, there is a problem. If it is a wealthy company, wealthy person or vocal minority the problem is the same: The rules become unfair.
MS isn't bad because they are rich or greedy. MS's problem is they play the game like they are a small company still. The rules change as a company grows. What a tiny company can do is not the same as what a mega-corp can. The rules are not the same for the strong and the weak.
If BeOS had demanded the same from Dell no one would blink. People would question Dell's choice, shareholders might scream and that's all.
The recording industry DOES (currently) perform a service. They find people with talent and produce them. They fund the band to go into a studio and turn out polished music. Some people are able to turn out something just as polished but that is not going to be common.
Even suppose there was a MASSIVE swelling of excellent music from the masses, you think the recording industry would sit by and twiddle their thumbs?? As soon as people start to make a serious name for themselves, as soon as someone REALLY starts to hit it big, some label is going to sign them.
The people who make excellent music are PEOPLE. Most people need to work to live. If a record company says they will pay you to make music a musician will take it!
Again, the net has already seen this play out to some extent with writing. ANYONE can write anything they want and publish it on the net. A lot do. A lot of what is written is crap, a very small amount is very good. Hence karma. Still, how many of/. links are to a major media site?
Things will change. The RIAA & Co. are holding on to something that can not last. Technology will move forward and so will the Ludites in time. The only thing that is different about THESE Ludites is that they are at the top of the social order in stead of the bottom. So, instead of destroying machines they get laws passed. The important point is that Ludities NEVER WIN - technology is all about advantages. Those who use tools will always prosper in the end.
Exactly in what way are the large stations kept out by the smaller stations? What "room in terms of bandwidth" is missing now?? Are you trying to say that all the smaller webcasters are keeping out the big companies by buying up all the bandwidth??
I guess lack of alternatives is GOOD for me because then I don't have to worry about what I like and I can just take what I am given. No more thinking required! Lucky me!
It always amazes and saddens me when someone is so mis-guided.
> 99% of the 60s radicals wanted an excuse to do drugs and have sex. They railled against society and used it as an excuse for permiscuity.
APPENTLLY according to you, no one in the 60's or 70's cared about anyone other than themselves. Everything that happened in that period was just about sex, drugs and rock 'n roll. The injustice of the country at that time didn't effect people at all.
From 1955 to 1985 our culture became VASTLY more open and equal. In that time frame the country changed drastically. Women entered the work place. Blacks rights were protected by law. The voting age was brought down to the same age as the draft.
Sure, some people were purely self-serving and base. For those people there was and always will be only one reason to do anything. However many other people thought it was wrong for a black woman to have to stand on a bus based on her skin. Many thought it was wrong the USA could make someone go to war but that person couldn't vote. Many thought it was wrong that women did not have the same choices in life that men did.
Many of the people that spoke out had a TERRIBLE life during those years. Spied on, jailed, beaten and abused by their government & fellow citizens. They were a minority then and still are today.
THEN however they were very vocal and for good reason - There were terrible injustices in this country. Today things are quite - there is no "great" injustice on par with what was present then. While copyright, the WTO and Gays are all important issues BUT they are not quite on the same scale as the rights of a black man, the rights of a woman, of someone having to go off and DIE because their government picked their name out of a hat.
> Notice that the same "hippies" that spit on our servicemen returning from Vietnam and protested Vietnam are all flying the USA Flag on their SUVs in suburbia?
You are a lucky person. You can tell, at a glance, what someone's views were 30 years ago just by looking at their car!! AMAZING! I was under the impression that there were a large number of people in the 60's and 70's who LIKED and approved of the war then. I don't even NEED to mention that the "War on Terror" is JUST LIKE the Vietnam war.
Somehow I am guessing that if we started killing 50,000 people a year in Iraq or anywhere else people might feel differently. If thousands of our troops were dieing every year people might feel differently.
And speaking of feeling different: Can a person change their view during their life without being a sell-out? A person who's view do not change as they age is a moron, dogmatic or (most likely) both.
Oh,and we REALY "won" the cold war. That is if by "winning" you mean that an un-just and un-workable system collapsed in upon it's-self form probelms inherint to the system. Copyright will likly collapse the same way one day. It is a model that works for certain things and not for others. When it does collapse and trasform into something new, many poeple will say they "Won". The battle will be won because it has to be,because the is no other long term answer.
There is just so much more that is so SAD in your post. So much that screams to be addressed. You even mention the FRENCH!!! So much that I really wonder if your post is nothing more than a joke.
It amazes me that so many on here DID miss the best aspect about this. In fact, the best aspect of ANY "A.I." is that it will be DIFFERNT than humans. A.I. of the future will likly work hand-in-hand with humans, each system will exploit the benifits of the other.
That makes sense: Take a small snapshot of a companies stock price and say,"Seee how bad it has done!"
If I could go back and invest just $1,000 dollars in Microsoft in 1986 I would never have to work again.
Unlike Cisco or any number of other compaines that grew up during the.com days in the last 3 years, Microsoft has be profitable for YEARS and will remain so. They have done fantastic by thier sharholders (who I reget to say am not one of) and the reason is the same they so many on/. are qiuck to point out: MS will do whatever it takes to make money.
Which is EXCATLY what ANY company is supposed to do. WITHIN THE LAW. Thats where MS has some probelms. MS can't quite understand why there are any rules about how to play and that THEY, MS, have to follow the rules......
WHY is it always so hard for people to beleive that PEOPLE are asses, just like companies.
I don't know if you have noticed but there are Not Nice People in this world. Not all of them work for a gorverment or a business.
Using the wonderful notion that compaines like Symantec creates virus we can apply it to other areas of of our life.
MICROSOFT must be defacing all of the IIS web sites. Defaced website encourgae people to hire MCSEs to secure thier servers. I mean, MICROSOFT makes it just so easy to do! Why would any one ever deface a website?? Only MICROSOFT would ever do that.
When ever someone is shot it is because the GUN MANUFACTURES did it. GUN MANUFACTURES what people to be scared and buy more guns. I mean, why would anyone ever shot someone else?? Only a GUN MANUFACTURER would ever do that.
GOVERMENT likes to encourage fear. So,if things are too quite and happy for thier citzens, THEY just go out and shoot somebody or blow up a building. Because as we all know no PERSON would ever do that. That is the sort of thing only a GOVERMENT would do.
Some people are just mean. They do mean stupid things. They may have many reasons: For attention. Just to be cool. Because they just like being mean. Because they can.
There are plenty of dirty compainies doing plenty of things they are just not right. We don't need to make things up. RIAA, Microsoft or just about any large Oil company has PLENTY of dirty deeds or desires to keep someone busy.

It's not NEARLY that simple.

You must work for the recording industry.
