Nah, I think that you will find that it is the WEST Yorkshire Police. They for sure announced such a move within the last year or so. I should know as well as I used to work in the IT Systems team there and I knew the top IT guy. As it happens, he first mooted the idea of using Linux to me before I left which is just over six years ago !! Is that forward thinking or what ?
That's exactly what it's about. There are already examples of online games that have been hacked recently with players having their characters that have been developed over a long time wiped out by cheats. That's no kind of entertainment for these paying customers.
Look at the eagerly awaited Star Wars Galaxies. How many people would be rushing to sign up if they thought that other people were going to spoil all of the fun ? These systems have an obligation to make sure that they are secure and safe from cheats.
It could also stifle this market and prevent other new systems from being developed.
How about this though ? _If_ SCO is a 'losing corporation' as you put it, why wouldn't they want to save their skins ? If you had shares in SCO then you would surely want them to look after your investment in the company ? This must seem pretty reasonable to most investors.
The question is, what about Sun letting Open Office out for free ? What's in it for them ? Only obvious reason as far as I can see is to try and break MS's hold on the office suite market but they're not even in that market themselves. Bit sad really.
So why don't you stop advising them to get Linux if it's resulting in so many problems for them ? You're hardly helping them if you give them systems that will not do what they want them to
"rebooting every 5 seconds, freaking out about emailed viruses, BSODs, warez, etc.."
Please ! That's utter crap and you know it. Back to the old myths. The 'proper' MS OSes don't need rebooting all the time, they don't BSOD all the time. In fact, they do this rarely.
With all the publicity about worms and viruses in the media, if your contacts are so stupid as to open attachments they deserve what they get.
And what on Earth has warez got to do with MS ??????
"It's about freedom to choose."
Exactly, and that's why most people use Windows. Like it or not, they know that it's the standard and that whatever they want to do, they can do it with minimal fuss using an app from their local PC World. They could move to Linux for little or no $$$ but it would be worth it.
Too true. It just makes these people look like big kids. You don't see the MS community writing $un, for example do you ? The Linux advocates who do this are loosing the arguement before they say anything that could have merit.
Tell you what, I'd be well amused if Microshaft (see, isn't that SO childish ?) bought Sun. Bill's probably seeing how much loose change he's got in his pocket as we speak. Bet he's even got enough down the back of his chairs.
The style guide for Acorn's RISC-OS operating system took the view that buttons should be meaninful as opposed to standard choices such as OK, etc. Options might have been SAVE or DISCARD, for example.
Also, RISC-OS used an 'icon bar' in the late 1980s. It was just a total nightmare to program for.
Sure. You only have to watch Sworfish to see Hug Jackman using the authentic 3D user interface. It would have been crap without his Voodoo card

Exactly. Let's not forget that MS has invested heavily in usability testing and that KDE and Gnone have borrowed many of the same features that Windows uses.
Also, people do like to customise their own machines with themes, etc and that we all like to work on a machine that 'feels good'.
I've been talking about this myself recently. Our Novell servers just ran and ran. They were great. But, Novell just took their eyes off the ball and went from the total market leader to someone who hardly ever even gets compared with Microsoft anymore. Linux has their place now.
They look at office suites, etc, and let it all slip through their fingers.
It looks like they're courting Linux to try and get some of the 'glory' rubbing off onto themselves.
And let's not forget that it has the hard disc as well for all those maps and textures. Compare Dead or Alive 3 with a similar genre game on the PS2. There's a lot more scope on the Xbox.
Exactly ! Comparing my own workplace, the roles of the Unix and Windows admins are VERY different. The Unix guys tend to do work for themselves and the DBAs. The Windows guys have to deal with literally thousands of users making regular requests for work to be done - install an app (very easy using GPOs), restore a file because I deleted it last week, share my files with someone else, plus all of the other routine stuff. We have a big ratio of Windows admins to servers but by working smarter, not harder, they keep the sites up and running while moving the business forward.

Yes, and some of us don't ! There are surely more of us who do like the Americans. Why shouldn't we ?
And some of us guys like walking around in pairs wearing women's clothes and yet again, some of us (including me) don't. So what's your point ?

Using MS SUSS I'm pretty sure that you can do just that. Then you control what is released to what and when it happens
