Well - I am a big fan of SME server. I liked it before it went open-source late last year - and have deployed at least 10 servers this year based on that platform. I hope Lycoris will keep their end up and that the community will continue to assist.
You can pick up an old Cobalt Qube on ebay for around $100. There are howto's - if you dig - for porting FreeBSD to one of these. They are about 7.5" cubed and draw very little power. I've got 5 of them around the country and they've been going strong for over 5 years.
They are here too. In Annandale Virginia, a highly concentrated Korean population has brought the PC Baang to America. I know of at least 10 in the area - and the costs are very low - like $2 per hour of pc time.
