Interesting question: how has their[1] view of women been shaped by women's disgust and rejection of them? What THEY think of women...how about what women think of THEM? (there's that scary "them" again...why do we always use this word when we talk about people we don't understand and have no desire to understand?) A little understanding goes a long way. The desire to label men as objects, to say they are nothing more than pantyskirt perverts, dehumanizes men and makes them into complete monsters, undeserving of any sympathy or human dignity.

[1] The modern system of sex and gender would not be possible without a disposition to interpret the difference between genders as the difference between self and Other ... having a sexual object of the opposite gender is taken to be the normal and paradigmatic form of an interest in the Other or, more generally, others. Since over 50% of people are women, their views must be taken as mainstream now.

I can think of no better standard-bearer for this zeitgeist (widely shared among journalists - get a few drinks in one and ask her) than the quote below:

"CBS News has a culture, has a history that for those of us who work here, is very real - that we see it as a sort of magical mystical kingdom of journalistic knights - and I know I can mentally hear people rolling their eyes, that's the way we feel."
    Ex-CBS News anchor Dan Rather

This knight of journalism was run out of office by neocons for trying to show the world the truth about President Bush. It didn't work. :( We got four more years of Bush. :( :( :(

After being fired for his daring move to remove Bush and elect Kerry, Rather said, "In many ways on many days, [reporters] have sort of adopted the attitude of 'go along, get along. What many of us need is a spine transplant." The Texan added. "Whether it's City Hall, the State House, or the White House, part of our job is to speak truth to power." Powerful words, from a powerful man. The world needs more people like him, to tell stories according to the prevailing majority (among journalists, that is) narrative. We miss him.

It's not caution, it's just plain rejection of The Other...of something different...of people whose skin doesn't look like ours. Why don't you crawl back into the primitive cave you came from, and the rest of civilization will continue going forward without you. Obviously, don't vote any more, either. So, we attack the government, the government attacks back, but we, the good people, make sure we're nowhere around so that the retaliation falls on innocents. These people, having been harmed by our provocations, provide recruits and financing for further revenge-motivated attacks. Repeat, etc. Dividing the country into factions? Is a bunch of young Israeli lawyers working round the clock sustained only by Diet Coke, falafel and cigarettes about to pull off the legal equivalent of the Six-Day War? A really good link which you should read. Here is another.

The Israelis have learned from the last flotilla, and hacked international law to serve their ends. The law firm Shurat HaDin (motto: "Bankrupting Terrorism - One Lawsuit at a Time") has done a bang-up job worthy of admiration, even if you're one of those people who thinks (like Hamas, the recipient of the aid flotilla) that Israel has no right to exist. I really recommend reading the link above, it does a great job of laying out what exactly has been done. They wrote letters to the insurers of the boat, warning them that under international law they would be legally liable for the consequences of helping Hamas. They informed INMARSAT that continuing their service exposed the company to liability. And, most hilariously, the legendary Greek bureaucracy has helped tremendously. Once a complaint is filed and an investigation started, the Greeks aren't exactly known for efficiency. American government is a model of speed compared to this.

Some more interesting facts: there is no pressing need for the aid flotilla. The last convoy actually succeeded in making the Israelis open up land borders and things are super in Gaza now. If the goal was to actually deliver aid, then the flotilla could dock in Egypt and have the goods delivered overland, permission has already been granted. Of course, this offer was refused because that's not the goal of the flotilla. It exists only to remove Israel's legitimacy as an entity (in other words, the same goal as Hamas). Yeah, yeah, right, you don't believe me. OK, how about what Adam Shapiro, co-founder of the International Solidarity Movement and a board member of the Free Gaza Movement said at a speech at Rutgers (to enormous applause, by the way)

Free Gaza is but one tactic of a larger strategy, to transform this conflict from one between Israel and the Palestinians, or Israel and the Arab world...to one between the rest of the world and Israel.

Nobody in the Free Gaza movement gives a shit about being a delivery boy for rice and cooking oil. Journalists should really listen when organizations state their goals in public, but who gives a shit when the facts don't fit the narrative.

Chinese is a freaking mountain. The more you learn, the harder it gets. And guess what: Chinese people don't even speak Chinese. Millions of them speak regional languages. Mandarin (putonghua) translates as "the common language". It was invented so that a giant country could have a dialect that could be used nationwide, a great advantage.
