If no is not a sufficient answer and you can not come up with a legitimate business case the a replicated DB would be my choice. Possible business case reasons: No way to prevent access to other customers info without significant development time and expense Server may not be able to handle the expanded load Not enough licenses for the server
If you have to Charge for creating the replicated data charge for development time to provide access charge for service of maintaining replicated data write read only views to the data restricting what they actually have access to.
Actually I would wager that they are covering thier bottom line.
Tough for them to sell HP Hardware and Linux solutions if buys are worried about getting sued if they do buy.
Actually, Knoppix does a very good job of recognizing obscure hardware and running.
It can run from a CD, the images are avaiable at their site. I booted my Dell Inspirion Notebook with out any difficulty, it recognized all of my harware and the diplay was excellent. It does only mount the HD file system in read only, but it gives you the option to mount read/write (use with caution if useing WinXP). I can also set up a premanent file to save setting and file while the system is running.
I had thought that it was pretty clear. TERRORIST DON'T USE E-MAIL
The internet is so open and not private that it doesn't make a good form of secure communication with out a lot of effort. And it should be pretty obvious when those methods are used since encrypted traffic looks, well, encrypted (DUH).
How can the ability to track every persons usage of the interent help with finding and fighting terrorism. How about convincing people that anger, killing and destruction may get attention but they don't solve problems.
Sine everyone seems to have covered the Secutrity & Hardware issues I would like to suggest A software solution.
I suppose you have thought about this some but are you aware of FreePM (FreePM.org).
It is a Practice Management system based on the Zope Web server.
Having the medical records served thru an intranet solves the problem of someone walking off with one of your PDA's loaded with patient record.
Appropriate security precautions must be applied of course.

Before you get started, head on over to LinuxMedNews.org
There are many Open Source EMR projects that could use more help.

Have you checked around Source Forge for similar projects?
Have you check www.linuxmednews.com?
There are lots of projects in progress currently, perhaps you could work with one of those and help them out?

The unfortunate thing is, Unions are exactly what the members put into them, just like the US government.
Yes some Unions may have corruption at all levels, but at least the members have the ability to make a change. try that with Enron or Worldcom.
I belonged to a union (CWA), heard a lot of members complain, but it was mostly those that really didn't come to meetings, or vote in electons.
The Union belongs to the members, they are responsible.

Give it a try.

Actually this might be very useful in healthcare facilities for the bed side nurse.
Currently some hospitals IIR use cell phones for managers and pagers for others.
a lot of faciliteis are putting in wireless networks to support mobile workstations for staff to use with electronic documentation.

You might want to look at Novell. I spoke with a Novell rep last week. They supposedly will be supporting MySQL in a clustered environment.
