UO has at least two such places... the jail where players are taken to speak to the GMs and the macro box where folks who are unattended macroing are sent in order to get them out of the way of the regular players. Neither are quite the same as SL's cornfield which is a place where residents are temporarily banished to when they've committed an appropriate infraction.
I used to write IRC bots in 1992 that match the first six claims...maybe more... I got tired of reading the claims. I wasn't the first person to write such bots, either, I was just duplicating the efforts of others.
I have to second the ferret recommendation... for the reasons mentioned in the previous post. I have ferrets, hedgehogs, and dogs... and the ferrets seem like the best geek pet... they don't crave the non-stop attention that my dogs do, and they're ready to play at any odd hour. The hedgehogs are very similar... less fur, more quills, less playful attitude; more investigative. Both Hedgehogs and ferrets are illegal in some states, so do some research... oh, and if you do get a non-canine/non-feline companion I recommend that you get it directly from a breeder... there are lists of breeders on the 'net.
In fact, I can't think of a single OS which would catch something as drastic as a motherboard change without at least a partial reinstall (like Win2K allows you to do. Don't know if you have that option in Linux).
Try BeOS. You can change pretty much any hardware to another supported piece of hardware without having to mess with the OS. Everything just works.
Not only is Microsoft's website often returning database error when I try to utilize it (mostly the msdn sections), but it's frequently rearranged so that there are many broken links, and I can't easily find the same page there twice.
The latest insult is that a few days ago when I tried to reach http://www.microsoft.com/Data/ in order to download the latest MDAC, I kept getting what appeared to be very wordy 404 errors that indicated that that page did not exist. This was very discouraging, since I needed MDAC 2.1 for a consulting project. Figuring that they'd rearranged the site yet again, I did a search of Microsoft's site for "MDAC" only to find that all the hits were under the previously attempted link, and all of these pages returned the same error. All of this occurred on a Win98 box with all the latest updates (except IE 5) running IE 4.01SP2.
Unwilling to believe that they'd taken down the data access site, I tried to reach http://www.microsoft.com/Data/ from a WinNT 4.0SP5 box running IE 5. Guess what? It worked. It appears that Microsoft has effectively "IE 5 only"ed all of the developer's content on their site. Considering that IE 5 exhibits big memory/handle leaks on the one machine I have it installed on, I'm not eager to promote its use (however, I do like the updates to Outlook Express, and have had no troubles with that part of the product.)
I have a NETQue ethernet to serial & parallel print server. I wonder if I could use lpd to stream an MP3 over ethernet to my print server and out to the MP3 decoder. Any thoughts?
I could only be so lucky.

See http://www.voyanttech.com/ for details.
Of course if you run WinNT and it doesn't bluescreen on its own with sufficient frequency, you can always try the BlueScreen Screen Saver from the Sysinternals website.
Benefits:
inexpensive
very very strong
user configurable
can replace the particle board with 18" shelving with minimal cutting
Tonight I will be trying to attach a rack mountable KVM switch, I suspect that the 18" side will be just about right for that purpose.
I got my 8 port KVM here very inexpensively (about 1/7 the price Insight lists):

BeOS 4.5 much easier to install than Win9X or WinNT. In fact that's one of my favorite things about BeOS.

Anyone care to check if http://www.microsoft.com/Data/ is accessible from Netscape, Opera, or other browser?
