  1. Re:I use this to run Amarok on Windows on Testing the KDE 4.2 Release Candidate, On Windows · · Score: 1

I used a plain WinXP with the kde4win packets. Even there I never came beyond the splashscreen. Maybe it has something to do with the drivers for the soundcard. So I miss amarok when I am stuck with Windows.

  3. You don't have to have some AV Software on the sys on Flawed Survey Suggests XP More Secure Than Vista · · Score: 1

Faulting an AV-less Vista for not stopping viruses is a bit like faulting a door without a lock for opening when the handle is twisted. That is not right. If I build a house with a front door and a reasonable good lock, there iss e difference to a house in the woods with no lock at all. Software architecture can sure make a difference if it is easy for malware to take unwanted advantage. You don't have to have some AV Software on the system installed, if the OS would only allow signed code from trusted sources to execute.

But then again you have other problems. ;)

My 2cents: M$ could have made Vista more secure out-of-the-box without AV-Software.

Since most of your ram will be filled with cache, you don't need a huge swapspace, just enough to cope with transient periods of pressure.

The size should actually depend on the speed of your hard drive. On current drives I recommend about 256MB of swapspace (no matter how much ram you have). You could double it for a striped raid0 array of swapspace.

I use the ck patch series for my thinkpad kernel. From the FAQ of the page I have the following information, which seems to come from a kernel developer and was alway enough for me, also on productive servers out in the wild.

How much swapspace should I allocate?
Unfortunately there is not much good documentation on swapspace that is meaningful on today's hardware. As the discrepancy between ram speed and hard drive speed becomes greater each year, the old rule of 2*ramsize is just plain wrong. This was in the old days because the addr space was directly mapped into the first half of the double RAM sized swap, giving an easy translation formula; only the space >> RAM size was usuable as additional space.

I am not happy with an ftpmaster as new project leader. They were the cause why the last one gave up.

But on the other hand, there is finally a chance for some movement and some chances; both are needed by this brilliant and outstanding project which is completely stuck by politics now; just like "the real life"(tm) *sigh*.

Debian has a very good packaging system with very well definied dependencies. You could install a system and update it over and over again, without the need to reinstall.

On the other Hand, Debian integrates security fixes without using the new upstream version from the original package maintainer, giving software developers a solid plattform to base the applications upon.
