I suggest that in most people's view, the only way to end up "good" is to be "good" all the way through.

    Bad to good:
You yourself have suggested that Gates' misuse of Microsoft nullifies his later good actions.

    Good to bad:
Roman Catholic Priests, once considered to be a humble and honored profession will likely never be able to move past the reputation of their peers in the eyes of the masses.

While Intel's batch of in-design processors may not keep up, and the engineers' current take on things seem to be dim, I would think a longer period would have to go by before it could be determined whether Moore's laws will hold. New designs have caused great jumps in the past that have kept the overall change of things in line with Moore's law.

Around the time that /. posted about Robocode, the java teaching material where you design robots and they fight, etc., etc. somebody showed me a product by a Massachusetts-based company called CogniToy. It's called MindRover, a game where you build a robot using a platform and some add on devices and then 'wire' them together. You get to use all kinds of logical operators in your wiring. It's like a small programming environment. Really neat, and kind of addicting.
