At this point in the future, there is only innovation in the games itself, but not on the hardware. So at this point, there will be a request for a common platform.
Okay... I let's wait and look if MS still exits at that point.
If you restart from scratch, is the result better than before? And if it is really better, how long is it better? After adding one feature, or the second? Sooner or later the code will smell again. Then it will smell more. After that you have to rewrite again.
But everytime you have to rewrite again more work has to be done to get a state in which the software is usefull again.
Sooner or later you can not afford this time. And the software will die. It will not die at once. But software that doesn't change, is dead software. No one will ever change the code again. No one uses dead software, sooner or later all the users will take another software. At this point all your work is lost.
May be you should try to decide what are the core features and always look that they are in a good state. Doing so a will make real progress, because the core will grow bigger, if you make good chances.

There are a lot of applications, where you can skin - like WinAmp,KDE,Gnome. But all the skinning is limited. Writing a MP3 with a cool Flash skin is very hard - I tried it.
But with Flash you could write cool skins, that do a little bit more than just moving a couple of bitmaps. And this skin could be done by real designers.
You may say, that's something you don't need, because it's something for the eye. But hey why was skinning introduced then?

Hello!
I have a Mac OS X-Machine on my desk and there is fink, which allows me to use the debian package management system too. But I don't do it.
Why not steal a little bit from the Mac OS X ideas ?
There is a library folder, with all libraries in it. On Linux, this could like this:/Library/readline-1.2.0/Library/readline-1.2.3/Library/readline-1.3.1/Library/perl-10.2.3 etc. In order to use that stuff, there are only links inside the "normal" places. So there could be a link from/usr/bin/perl ->/Library/perl-10.2.3/perl/perl Exception is the bare-bone stuff like inside/bin - certainly.
Application stuff, that's not started from the command-line like KDE or Gnome should through away their starter-stuff. This ugly stuff is borrowed from Microsoft and it's evil. On Mac OS X, there is an "Application" folder and every folder inside this has an.App suffix. If you click on this folder, the finder starts the applications with this path:/Application/_app-name-folder_.app/MacOsX/_the-bin ary_ All other stuff for the application like icons, translation files and that stuff is inside the _app-name-folder_.app.
OLE objects leave an image (bitmap or metafile) of the content they represent. So it is possible to print an autocad document even if autocad is not installed. So it's also possible to filter them.
Furthermore there are only a very limited number of OLE objects that are really working. Every experienced user of MS-Office does not use that stuff.

Mr. Wartmann is also one of the author of the original 2.x blender handbook.
I bought this (the blender book) some time ago in germany, before it is translated to english and it is a very bad book.
He just wrote down a typical demonstration show but if I want to learn a software, I want to play with it and that is not supported by this book.
So you also need the orignal handbook with the reference and the shortcuts description.
Regards.
