Actually, I'd say NASA has a much greater and more obvious impact on our quality of live than the Department of Education. All the Dept. of Ed. can do is take surveys and make recommendations. Oh, and waste BILLIONS and BILLIONS of dollars in doing so.

Also, that article is bottom-of-the-barrel as far as science writing is concerned. I've seen 4th graders write more enlightening and informative articles than that.

Hmmm... i couldn't find anything for "Tablet PC" at the US Patent and Trademark Office website, so I'll assume that "Tablet PC" can refer to any tablet shaped computer.

I've seen and used a number of what I've called "Tablet PCs" in the past. Some of these were x86-based, some were not. Would you call the Vadem Clio a Tablet PC?

Where do I start? A Tablet PC can run _ANY_ OS that has ported to run on the hardware. What you said has got to be the most moronic thing I've heard in a long time.

    >The AirPanel is a large PDA running the terminal server client.

Well... yes, it _CAN_ run the terminal server client, but according to the ViewSonic site, the OS is "Microsoft® Windows® CE .NET".

Are you differentiating between a PC and a PDA based on processor or form factor? You might be surprised to find that the differences aren't so clear anymore.

    Or am I missing something?

Nothing you said makes any sense whatsoever. I have a Tablet PC on the way that runs DOS 6.22, are you suggesting I try to put XP on it?

SciFi's Dune was the biggest dissapointment of the whole millenium for me. It just plain reeked.

Technically, it follows the first book more closely than Lynch's, but that's not necessarily a good thing. Lynch took liberties with the film because he had to in order to make a good film. He knew what he was doing. The jokers who made SciFi's version are the media's equivilent of paper MCSE's. They got hired because they went to film school or whatever, but couldn't film their way out of a wet paper bag.

Lynch's version RaWkEd, even if it is a different story, it just stands by itself as a fantastic film.

If you think you're gonna run Linux on one of these Shuttle mini systems, and you're not interested in having an unsupported doorstop, check around to see if anybody else is successfully sunning linux or *bsd and X and net and usb and ieee1394 and whatever else you might want to run.

I've had nothing but problems with my SV, and while it's fun trying things out to make it work, i really needed a new workstation, not a new project, and had I done more research prior to buying, I probably would have picked up something else.

They are schweet little systems though ;-)

    Check for linux compatabilty first!

Shuttle released a SVGA driver for their crappy Savage4 onboard video, they even give you a nice little utility called s3switch or something to control the TV out THAT DOESN'T DO A FSCKING THING!

The best I could do was 256 colors @ 640x480, and I only got that once. After restarting the server it just bombed over and over again.

Video in Win2K isn't bad, but the TV out doesn't work either! I'd like to be able to watch my new Robotech DVDs on da big screen (bigger than 15", andyway) but I can't because Shuttle can't ship drivers that work.

Before I'm modded down for being off-topic...

My point is that some manufacturers cut serious corners when it comes to ultra-small form factor PCs. Unless it's being done by a company w/ enough experience building laptops to be able to miniaturize and consolidate all that crap into a really small form-factor, don't trust their products to support linux (even if they claim it does) until you see it for yourself, cuz if something sounds too good to be true...

Currently it's pretty easy to set up a wireless network in your home that would enable you to stand outside your house and connect to the internet through your mobile device. What technologies exist to facilitate the ablitly to provide guest access to everyone within range of my xmitter, and to coordinate other free resources like mine in my area, i.e., to provide roaming, etc., like current cell providers can?

This type of network could potentially compete with commercial wireless ventures, eh?

I for one would be willing to shell out some dough to do this if enough of my neighbors (relatively speaking) did so.
