  1. Oldest computer is my trusty... on What's the Oldest Hardware You are Still Using? · · Score: 1

Commodore Amiga 4000. Yep, it's still running just great as my primary machine. My system isn't the most up-to-date, even by Amiga standards, but it does the jobs I need it to handle. In a nutshell, this is what I play with on a daily basis:

Amiga 4000, powered by a Motorola 50MHz 68060 processor, 144MB ram, Picasso IV graphics card with 4MB video memory, Ariadne-II 10BT Ethernet, 84GB of HD space, including a 1GB external JAZ and a 250MB interal ZIP drive. And I've got a hacked Dell external laptop floppy drive connected so I can read/write PC formatted high density floppy disks.

On the software side, I run my web, email, telnet and FTP servers on this box over a 1.5Mbit DSL line. Not the most modern, or perhaps even the most secure setup, but then again there aren't too many people out there who would try to break into such an ancient system. Besides, I just can't break away from ARexx to move on to something else. Yeah I know, I can learn to use Rexx on other platforms, but all the other software doesn't have a communications port to let me use scripts to control their every function. This is one of the main things that keeps me from completely migrating to Linux. Thankfully my wife's PC dual boots Win2K (ugh!) and RH9, so at least I do have something else to play with when I want.

  2. Extreme Resolution on 13.8MP Kodak Tops Previously Leaked Canon · · Score: 3, Informative

Just had to do the quick math to figure out the approximate "top end" that one of these cameras can shoot. My admitedly aging Epson PhotoPC 750z is a 1.9MP camera, and tops out at 1600x1200 in an interpolated mode. Normal mode is only 1280x960 which is still fantastic for what I use it for, namely web page creation. I think it is still easier to crop and scale down than to scale up.

Anyway, going with the assumption of a 4x3 aspect ratio in the new camera, 13.8MP would yield a resolution of roughly 4300x3225 (13,867,500 pixels). Doing simple division to fit that roughly into an 8x10 photo would give you about 410dpi. A far cry better than the 150dpi that my camera is capable of. And while it is still not in the ballpark of 720dpi (7488x5616 or 41.8MP), it's surely a lot better than this amature photographer is ever going to need.

When the 20MP cameras are available, we will be looking at 5168x3876 (20,031,168 pixels) which yields 495dpi for an 8x10 photo.

  3. Lower Priced Dell Computers on Dell To Sell To Retailers · · Score: 2, Informative

Sure, I think that the prospective costs of a "whitebox" computer could definately let someone purchase a Dell computer for a great deal cheaper than they can get directly from the online Dell store. I think a lot of the markup on most major brands (not just PCs, but this applies to everything from clothing to cars and then some) is the brand name. There's always someone out there who has a similar product for less price. Just take a walk through your local grocery store and you'll see all the generic brands available, side-by-side with the name brands, and the costs are a lot less. So now that Dell is selling these systems without their logo, the price will drop off a bit for the end customer. Of course the cost of a service agreement, or tech support may not change. And with Dell pushing to get all their systems manufactured overseas (Mexico & China mainly), the cost of these systems can come down a bit more. Though personally I think the prices won't drop as far as they could, otherwise it would dig into the profit margin too much. And like any other company, Dell is in business to make money. It's just too bad for me that the company I work for is closing this location in November due to Dell pushing for overseas manufacturing of their cases and other components. It's been fun to see the new system designs a year or more ahead of the general public. And what's coming down the pipe for next year looks really cool. Just wish Dell would use these new case designs for their "whitebox" systems, and not go back to the boring beige box look of the past.

Here in this part of Texas, the sales tax is 8.25%, so my quick way of calculating the tip is just to double the tax. Sure, that ends up at 16.5%, but you can always round down to the nearest 50 cents.

It matters not how you play the game, but whether you bribed the judges properly in advance.

I was thinking along different lines, and wondering what it would take to mod up one of these displays and have it work with an indash DVD or mobile VCR system. Looking at the prices of the video monitors at various outlet stores, it seems that this could be a great low-end option for those that don't need top end displays in their cars. I know my kids would just be happy to watch a movie on it, even if it wasn't a 42" plasma screen like we have in the living room.

  6. What gets me... on CBDTPA Finds A Champion In the House · · Score: 1

In the Senate, joining Hollings as co-sponsors of the CBDTPA are one Republican and four Democrats: Ted Stevens (R-Alaska), Daniel Inouye (D-Hawaii), John Breaux (D-Louisana) and Dianne Feinstein (D-California). At a hearing this month, Feinstein showed her colleagues a pirated movie that she said an aide had downloaded from a file-trading service.

So it's okay for a Senator's aide to illegally download a movie from the internet, and for the Senator to show this movie to her friends without any reprocussions. I wonder if they obtained permission from the copyright holder ahead of time to use this as a case sample. My bet is that they are doing the same thing at home behind closed doors themselves. Sometimes the blatant hypocracy just boggles the mind!
