If dos were a real operating system in the first place we never would have had this problem. However I believe the 8086 and 8088 were not capable of protected memory but I cold be wrong.
Correct! IMHO, DOS was a decent OS for a very limited chip. The 386 was probably the first Intel chip that could support a "real" operating system.
How old are you? When I was in my 20s, I ate everything that didn't move, and barely weighed 130 pounds (at 6'1"). That was 2 decades and 80 pounds ago.
Yup! When I was 21, I was semi-unemployed, which meant no car and plenty of time for walks. And when I ran to catch the bus, I literally ran. I ate more than some 3rd world countries, but was thin as a rail.
At 30, I had a full time desk job, a car, had put on quite a few pounds, and hadn't run in a long time.
At 47, well I'll just say I'm older, bigger, and slower than I was at 30. With a lot less food intake.:(
If the government makes a rule/law, those companies doing business there have 3 choices. 1. Follow the law.
2. Don't follow the law and pay the penalty that the said government has for non following.
3. Seem to follow the law and make lots of visible effort to follow said law while actually lobbying as much as possible to get the law changed so that they don't have to follow it.
Certainly, but if they know the law is morally wrong, then doing #1 is morally wrong. IOW, Evil (tm)!
Frankly, if I'm trapped in a cave by a 5 ton boulder, the only robot I want is one that can lift 5 1/2 tons. Just because the rescue team (if any) is busy doesn't mean I want to converse with a glorified tin can.
Alot of people consider Windows XP better than Vista. Do you consider XP out of date when millions of people still use it?
Actually, yes XP is out of date. That's not always a bad thing. Many people have decided that the steaming pile they know is better than the steaming pile they don't know.
My mom (over 70) doesn't have or want a computer. Awhile ago, she thought about getting one because she thought one of her radio shows would be taken off, and she wanted to listen to it on the computer. But the show was only off a couple of days, and when it returned she never said anything more about a computer.
I know someone who's poor, and he still has used email. His internet access is unrelible (it depends on whether he can pay his various bills that month), but he's certainly familiar with emailing.
It "ran" on my old 286. "Run" was overly optimistic, but it probably worked as well on that box as Vista does on 512M.

For one thing, I could have uptimes higher than 2 hours. OTOH, it was kinda nice taking a break every time the computer BSOD'ed.
IIRC, the activation features of XP were supposed to usher in the year of the Linux desktop.
Unfortunately, the last time I tried singing at the airport, I got arrested for terrorism.
Yeah, but there's nothing secret about that.
I see no evidence of discrimination against stupid people. In fact, it's quite possible for a stupid person to become President of the USA.
I bought a house where the grocery store went out of business, the library moved, the transit station closed, and the school just plain sux.
Of course. When something only happens twice in a decade, it makes news!
I never heard of that metaphor, but I knew there was no defense against the users that would sell their souls (and passwords) to see Brittany naked.
Untrue. I'm sure Avast is worth every penny I spent on it.
In contrast, The Phantom Menace only SEEMED like the longest movie. As in "will it ever end" long.

Oddly, I haven't been to the cinema since soon after I got my Tivo. :)
Yes, I'm sure they had no ethical qualms. Does that make it right?
Certainly, but if they know the law is morally wrong, then doing #1 is morally wrong. IOW, Evil (tm)!
Wrong analogy. It's more like, "If you want to do business with us, shoot that dog". We know what Google will do in that situation.
By that logic, if Google had been around in the 1930's it would have been fine for them to share information on the location of Jews in Germany.
*awaits cries of Godwin*

As opposed to Vista? Though, admittedly, it might be tainting Windows good name.

Oddly enough, I don't have a dishwasher. I don't need a dishwasher. That has nothing to do with my income level.
