    Intelligent people often don't breed at all. At most, they might have a couple of maladjusted brats. At the same time, the poor & stupid are breeding like rabbits, with 8+ maladjusted brats. Yeah, I have a good idea who controls the future.

    497 day wrap around? You should switch to Windows. I'm sure no such problem has ever been reported on that OS.

    Bingo! The last time I tried to install Linux, it was a royal PITA. I managed, with time, effort, and googling, to get things mostly working, but if it was that hard for me, 90+% of the people wouldn't have bothered.

    Linux was fine when I was young and had nothing better to do than tinker. But now, I'm old, I have bills to pay, and I have a social life. Maybe I'd have the brains to figure out how to get Linux working on my hardware, but I doubt that I have the time.

    You can pretty much install an RPM on RedHat, SuSe, and friends


    At one time, you couldn't install a Mandrake RPM on RedHat and expect it to work. I remember seeing seperate RPMs for RH, Mandrake, Suse, and probably others. I don't know if that's changed.

    I always thought that DOS 6 was really DOS 5 with extra utilities, most of which were already for sale seperately. For me, DOS 5 was the "sweet spot".

    IME, XP isn't as stable as Linux, but it's a huge improvement over Win9X. My XP box freezes several times a month, usually during shutdowns. In contrast, Win9X went down daily, often multiple times!

    I just bought a sub-$500 PC.. runs Vista just fine. It's an AMD Sempron 3500+, came with an Nvidia 6130, 2 gigs of ram, 200 gig harddrive, and a lightscribe DVD burner


    My GF's sister recently asked me about a Vista craptop that she was thinking about buying. I don't know most of its specs, but she told me it had a measly 512M of RAM. Obviously, some vendors ARE selling brand new PCs that can't really run Vista.

    That's pretty much my opinion. Vista isn't really bad (compared to XP), but it's not a "must-have" either. There are a few good things, a few bad things, and right now it's immature (some XP crap doesn't work under Vista).

    But people seem to be missing the point here - it's an operating system. You use it to launch applications and provide a framework for those applications to work in. That's all it does. What did you expect? Oral sex?


    Actually, yes! Sadly, that's one of the features they cut.

    Once you get to the form, it will say something along the lines of: "please UPGRADE your browser to the latest version of internet explorer for EXTRA SECURITY".


    Ironic, considering that I convinced several people to switch to Firefox for EXTRA SECURITY. :-P

    In one of the games I play, the moderators make "value judgements". If they decide someone is trying to game the system, they will give them one warning, and if the offender tries to "lawyer" his way out of it, they'll boot him. It works there because the mods are the final authority (the game owner doesn't get involved), and because the mods aren't idiots.

    Neither of which is true in schools.

    I never heard of getting stopped for that reason. Nobody ever stopped me when I had my crapmobile. The cops probably figured that if I was driving that POS, I couldn't afford drugs.

    I agree! In fact, I live in a "bad" area, and I haven't been shot yet, despite the perseption that bullets are constantly flying here. I suspect that most of the killing on the news is people who are actively involved in drug deals.

    I live in the midwest, and I normally try to be polite, but it often seems like I'm in the minority. I think it's more related to age than location. The younger people seem to have forgotten common courtesy.

    PS - Anyone running Windows, run a free anti-virus application, Norton and McAfee cause more performance problems and dig into the OS in areas they should never touch. If your XP or Vista installation on a computer made in the last 5 years takes more than 30secs to boot, you have hardware problems or crap like Norton or McAfee installed


    Agreed! I've heard people complain that Norton is broken under Vista. IMO, Norton is broken, period. I don't know about McAfee first hand, but it sounds just as bad. I've had no problems at all with Avast.
