    Please, these urban legends are not even funny anymore.
    With this kind of strong Black representation one would expect to see at least sort of proof or something come out of this "terrible injustice".
    So much noise, so much "fighting words" and at the end ... nothing.
    It is not that J. Jackson is afraid to blackmail or sue people but even he recognizes the fact that there is nothing to be won out of bogus claims.

    I just carefully pick my fights.
    A big difference if you ask me.

    Why should I fight against something I don't perceive any threat from ?
    I do think that overblown government breaking companies and dealing new rules left and right is a big danger but that seems to be of no concern for majority of /. readers.
    They just want MS.

    I have seen entire stores dedicated to Mac machines.
    I have seen shelves with Linux OS, BeOS and FreeBSD on them.
    People don't want that stuff. They want Microsoft.

    The overriding principle is to protect customers.
    If your "stringent rules" end up costing people more money then it is NOT a good solution.

    Yeah, it makes sense that IE can be treated as a software product and sold for $100.
    Thanks to your brilliant solution I would have to shell out $100 just to browse the web, in addition to spending $200 for latest MS OS 1, 2 or 3.

    You know what ? If you want to force MS to sell IE why not force Mozilla folks to do the same.
    We would see how competitive is that "Open Source" product.

    As far as typical users is concerned Linux is the definition of a flawed system where hardly anything works together and each program seems to be using its own set of fonts ( not mention following its own local rules as far as copy/paste functionality is concerned.)
    Where is your "superior" OS ?

    Linux is being promoted all over the place, comletely out of proportion to its importance.
    Do you see many lay people switching to that OS ?

    Don't know that.
    Obviously, people do not care for this functionality since for the last 10 years Windows development community got along just fine without it.
    If you want that functionality ( which is not supported by Win32) use Posix subsystem.
    If you have a problem with Win32 and decisions made by its designers, don't use it.

    You can. Don't remember details but MS has hooks for implementing your own customized login ( for use in hardware based authentication devices etc..)
    If you really care, you will information about it.

    If you tell me how to implement file system using Posix calls I will tell you how to do it using Win32 ( hint ... driver development kit.)

    It is mostly urban legend.
    There were some cases of MS not being completely honest about aspects of their APIs but this happens to many companies ( and more often can be explained by miscommunication and general mess than malignancy.)

    In any case, the mischief implied by people who refer to "hidden and dangerous APIs" is nothing but "urban legend".

    Damn, do you really expect MS to have people use these APIs ?
    Do you believe MS products do use NtCreateFile() directly or thru corresponding wrapper ?

    What stuff ?
    What are you talking about.
    MS is known to introduce new APIs ( common controls) by releasing them with new MS Office products, to be sure, questionable practice but far from what you accusing them of.

    You come up with your own conclusions and then immediately proceed to pass judgment on our little exchange as if you were an objective party to this discussion.

    You never outsmarted anyone here for the simple reason that you did not contradicted anything but small semantic mistake on my part.
    Your whole objection was to my single sentence "Isn't that what is all about ?"
    You do not and cannot deny that economy is what makes or breaks governments and therefore difference between 90% or , as you said "most of the time", and "all" is practically irrelevant to my main point.

    Heh, I never did that. I just pointed out that I know of no healthy and successful societies that do not enjoy strong and rich privately own industries.
    It was you who came up with that "SOCIETY != INDUSTRY"

    Sure there are examples where regulations are useful.
    The bottom line is that danger from over-regulating and effectively strangulating private enterprise is much greater than danger from said enterprise gone "berserk".

    That is certainly debatable.
    I have seen as many arguments against Reagan economical policy as for it.
    I have seen respected economists argue that 90s growth was a result of Reagan economic policies etc ...

    The difference is that in the US ( in the South) people did genuinely avoided black shops, requested separated public accommodations etc ..
    In Germany , all of this was instituted and enforced by the government.
    While some people had problems with Jews there were no institutionalized separation between Germans and Jews.
    It was all introduced by Nazi officials.
    Most Germans had no problem buying at Jewish shops while the same was unthinkable in some parts of US.
