You can make the same argument for the 2nd
"TNG" cast movie "First Contact" v.s. the first
one "Generations."
You could even do it with the TV shows; TNG
was better than TOS.
Note that in all cases it only works for 2nd over 1st, and the 3rd one is always bad (Star Trek III, or the lamentable "Insurrection" or DS9).
The New York Times article doesn't mention this in its brief discussion of "A Fire Upon the Deep," but part of the story revolves around an old-school USENET-style galactic discussion forum/communications medium. It even successfully predicts something like email virii but falls short of predicting an M1/M2 scheme as good as Slashdot's. Kudos!
