  4. Re:Nonsense on The Art of Aerobraking · · Score: 2, Insightful

If the shuttle is a prototype, then it has to be the most advanced prototype ever. The SSME is the most amazing engine in the world. To increase the Isp even a tenth of a percent would be an amazing accomplishment.

To add to this, there is an upgrade in the works. Several parts of the orbiter are being upgraded. The Avionics system is one of those. They've already put new displays and computer hardware in the cockpit and after the avionics is upgraded in a few years, it will be "up-to-date".

I agree that we need the money and public support that we had in the Space Race days of Mercury through Apollo. Unfortunately the public sees no reason for this. Back then we had the Cold War to fuel our need to advance in space technology. Now most people could care less. I don't think any wars in the next 10 years will show a demand for a TIE-fighter, unfortunately.

As for the space station ... well, they're working on that. But _that_ is where their money problems are coming from ;)

Do you have a link to that article? I'm curious to find out how they reduce the shock effects. I guess they could create lots of small angles on the leading edges, thus making several shockwaves that transition to subsonic more "smoothly", but I still don't see how that would reduce the effects of the shockwave to "innocent bystanders".

He mentions how part of the turbine was removed, but what part? If the row(s) of blades turning a generator were removed, I could understand that. I just don't see why someone would remove the turbine blades, but not the corresponding stators.

Also, even with the remaining stators diverting flow inefficiently, I wouldn't think it would reduce the overall thrust so much.

If the statistics are truly "made up", then the researchers should lose all credibility. My point is that statistics are often used deceptively to make one's point. I could say that in the past 10 years, e-commerce has risen xx% or I could say in the past 1 year, e-commerce has fallen xx% I could say a burrito is 5% fat (yuck!) or I could say it's 95% fat-free (yay!). Statistics can be construed to back up most anyone's opinion. You just have to know _all_ the facts before you interpret their argument.

  16. Fluid Dynamics on Fabulous Flying Machine Progress · · Score: 1

One problem of designating "sky lanes" comes from fluid dynamics. When one of these aircraft flies through a portion of air in a "sky lane", it creates vortices that take time to dissipate. Airports are limited to how quickly they can line up planes for takeoff and landing because of this problem. So these suggested "sky lanes" would not be nearly as crowded as car traffic lanes can get.

I wonder how they would regulate the pilot licensing for these things ... I hope they would require the current process of training at the very minimum. Considering how many people tailgate with cars, I can't imagine what would happen if some jackass tailgated mid-air and lost lift due to turbulence from the guy he's so madly tailgating. The jackass would then drop from his designated altitude and threaten the lane below him.

To put things back in perspective, sky lanes will not be implemented until both the technology is developed far enough to provide safe mass air travel for general pilots and well-defined laws/regulations are formed to keep flying commuters from chaotic wrecks.
