Let me get this straight, your analysis on why "the iPad (and similar devices) are not the *future* of magazines?" is based on numbers, market share, and content strategies today?
No, on numbers, market share, (and content strategies) from a month ago.
Haven't they heard of PDF? I mean, it's not as if the iPad doesn't have PDF written into its DNA from top to bottom, and that the format was pretty much invented for the very purpose to which they are not putting it here.
Is it? The interactivity abilities of PDF are what exactly? Hiding/unhiding text?
(...) C++ are completely different languages, with only similarities to C (...) without any dependencies on C implementations.
Although I'd be lying if I said I was a C++ specialist, last time I worked with it I had the impression that we could transparently plug C code into C++ code. It sounds like your description of Objective-C.
Of course you can - but if your C code uses any C++ keywords, there is not telling what will happen.
So the problem is that the memory of the iPhone is mounted and that the data is exposed? I may not understand this exactly but hasn't the argument been for many years now that iPods couldn't be directly mounted like that?
Well, they only can under the condition that you connect the iPhone to USB while powered off, then turn it on. Apple assumes it could be a “race condition” or “a pairing issue”.
Using a webkit browser is only logical, since the only non-webkit browser Apple have accepted is Opera Mini, and Opera isn't really a browser, it's just a front end that relays info to and from their server.
Ahh, so the fact that nobody but Opera has yet even tried to get a browser accepted is proof that Apple wouldn't accept them. And I thought you actually had something written by Apple.
How come then my N900 (which has an ARM Cortex A8 @ 600MHz) runs Flash, if not perfectly, then at least acceptably? Granted, Youtube et al are better with a dedicated app (then again, Flash video sucks on Linux, even with a beefy computer), but the occasional game is just fine.
Still only Flash 9.4 - which is way faster than 10.
And while 10 has been announced it is of course late.
In California, non-compete clauses are invalid. If I work at Apple and then leave, they have no legal reason to prevent me from accepting any job. Companies making agreements that are outside of the law are colluding, which is an antitrust violation.
Interesting spin, they only mention "agreed to avoid hiring each other’s employees" notformer employees.
Good point, also, appeals to "performance" are short-sighted in computer land. Anything which runs too slow on a computer this year will be butter by next year. Apple is not against flash because its bad, but because once the performance problems go away with the next generation of hardware, Adobe has a platform which can do an end-run around Apple's app-store ecosystem.
Interesting claim - so Apple doesn't want me to buy a brand new Mac in 12 months so Flash 10 will run on that as well as Flash 9 runs on my 3 year old iMac G5.
Flash games are useful if you want to play a video game on someone else's computer without needing to be an administrator on that computer. What would you recommend as an alternative? Java games? HTML5 Canvas games that don't work on IE 8?
You know what's so funny about your claims? That I had to downgrade to Flash 9 so that I could actually play some Flash games on my Mac instead of watching some slow-motion creepshow.
yeah listen up people, all you silly people out there, going to flash websites is wrong wrong wrong - just stop it - all of you!!!
if only you could realize how utterly stupid you sound- just for one split second.
(98% of Internet connected PCs have Flash Player
85% of the top 100 websites use Flash Player (Alexa)
75% of web video is viewed using Flash Player (Comscore)
98% of enterprises rely on Flash Player (Forrester)
70% of web games are delivered using Flash Player (Evans Data Corp.)
3.5 million developers use the Flash Platform
19 of the top 20 device manufacturers worldwide have committed to shipping Flash technology on their devices)
Thank you for proving that Apple is an evil monopolist trying to kill the little upstart Adobe.
If it comes down to Adobe Flash or HTML V5 H.264 I'll take Flash any day and twice on Sundays!
So instead of HTML5 and H.264 you'd rather take Flash and H.264 (which is what more and more "Flash videos" are). Gee, is there a reason for this, apart from H.264 being teh 3v1l?
Apple itself couldn't even survive without their draconian tying of hardware to their OS. When clones were licensed and they came with cheaper hardware even Apple's customers FLOCKED to the clone makers, nearly bankrupting Apple, because what most of them wanted was MacOS.
1997, 2.8 million Macs from Apple - biggest year for clone sales, estimated at 400,000 units.
The problem was they sold 4 Million Macs as well as 275k clones in 1996. The clones simply didn't increase Mac OS marketshare - the fact that the cloners didn't even try to sell them to non-Mac users didn't help a bit.
If you think its a good idea to lose money on a product, fine by me - just don't expect a company that follows you to last long.
The funny thing is: you certainly didn't buy anything from Apple when they were losing money - and their marketshare was also much lower. Maybe you should save the money on a "Hackintosh" or any other PC and invest in a decent education.
You and I will probably forget in a year. But the thousands of fishermen who can never fish in the gulf again will never forget.
Just like thousands of fishermen who can still not fish in Prince William Sound. Exxon is still the biggest publicly traded company.
Where's the blame on Apple? Shouldn't that read: "iPhone maker Apple's CPU supplier causes drought in China".

With the next release of the app, the built-in camera will be used to monitor the presence of an unauthorized over-the-shoulder reader
Errm, the iPad doesn't have a build in camera, and even the iPhone has no front facing camera (yet).
It's funny how people will point that out endlessly, but then completely forget for a quick joke - and instead think that's insightful.
Sure, but you can't get Flash anywhere - proof Google is evil.
And the fact that you can't get Flash for most Android phones is proof that Google doesn't allow it to be ported.

Seemed to me like they were going to have their own webkit (since that's the only one Apple allow)
So what do you base this claim on?

There are literally hundreds of third party solutions to the 'sealed' battery in your iWhatever.
All of them void the warranty.
And why do you want to replace a battery yourself that is still covered by warranty?

Um, how is Amazon breaking the law? They are running a competing DRM free music store that doesn't have artificially inflated prices like iTunes.
Sow how is Apple breaking the law? They are running a competing DRM free music store that has the same artificially inflated prices like Amazon.
Funny that, because their share price wasn't doing so well when Microsoft pumped money into Apple to keep them solvent just a few years ago.
Yeah, $150 Million, when Apple only had $1.2 in cash. What a float. http://news.cnet.com/2100-1001-202143.html

Actually Flash works for AMD64. For XP64 and the rest of MS's 64bit oses. But i guess you meant linux based 64bit oses.
Actually, Flash works on Windows 64 bit if you use it with a 32 bit IE. IOW with all the disadvantages from using 32 bit software on Win64.
As i don't need/like flash based games

BTW, Wal-Mart spend 2.3 billion on advertising in 2008. The largest in the world is GM at 3 billion for a comparison.
Wal-Mart (like McDonalds) focuses very heavily on advertising and consistency.
For what its worth: Apple's add budget 2008: $486 million
Apple itself couldn't even survive without their draconian tying of hardware to their OS. When clones were licensed and they came with cheaper hardware even Apple's customers FLOCKED to the clone makers, nearly bankrupting Apple, because what most of them wanted was MacOS.
Not really, even at the hight of the clone era the clones only sold 15% of what Apple sold. http://lowendmac.com/musings/mm07/0830.html

You do realize that Apple themselves produces practically none of their internal hardware...right?
Neither does pretty much anyone else - and when Apple did, you sure were among those who complained about "proprietary parts".
The funny thing is: you certainly didn't buy anything from Apple when they were losing money - and their marketshare was also much lower. Maybe you should save the money on a "Hackintosh" or any other PC and invest in a decent education.
