  4. Dev lockdown on Can Developers Work in a 'Locked-Down' Environment? · · Score: 1

When I was doing dev and patch work over at Nortel a couple of years back, they did this to us as well.... we had locked down HP-UX boxen with severely limited user permissions... and doing NT development, we logged into an uber-restricted NT box by VNC. Nortel was obsessed with lockdown, and we didn't have the appropriate termissions to runs the applications that we were compiling. When it was brought up with supervisors and directors, they'd refer us to IT, which, in turn, would refer us to our supervisors and directors.

In order to ensure output, all us guys on the floor pitched in and bought ourselves a couple of development machines so that we could actually get work done... but we had to fight with provisioning for three months in order to obtain two IP addresses for them. AAAAARRRGGHHH!!!!

We did, however, manage to make it look like we were working that whole time just by answering email and voice mail and going to the occasional meeting.

In conclusion, the stock options that they offered me are now worthless, I'm out of a job, and a company that stupid had to fall hard anyway. Ah, the good old days...

Then we moved to EAW stacks, which were seemingly endless and seemingly infinitely heavy.

What we decided was that the most efficient way for roadies to lift and setup large kits was just to numb our bodies by quickly slamming back three beers and running to install the gear in that period where we were numb but before we got clumsy.

    Worked like a charm.

What's why you listen to college and university radio.

I live in Ottawa, Canada, which is a city of about 750 000 people... we have two university stations (Ottawa and Carleton) and one college station (Algonquin) which you can't pick up unless you're on campus.

I used to have a show on CHUO (Ottawa U) for a few months- I'm a psy trance DJ and it was great for awhile until they started cancelling all the electronica shows. The new station manager is an ex-metalhead who gave my timeslot to his highschool bandmembers... the same thing for at least 8 other timeslots that I know of... so CHUO is the station you want to hear for bad metal.... he can't cancel the ethnic programs because there'd be a huge community backlash if he did.... that being said, CKCU Carleton is picking up most of the old electronica shows, so that's the station that everyone listens for the latest Drum and Bass, Trip Hop, Acid Jazz, Underground Trance, Miami/New York/Chicago house, and Techno.

I'm not quite sure what my point was.... although if you'll excuse me, it's late, and I've got a gig...
