Not by much. Assuming 5 day workweek at 8 hours a day, that works out to about 22 days work in a month, works out to about 8.60USD per day, or 1.02/hr.
And that's for a teacher, who is educated. If china is like most places, you can do a lot worse than being a teacher.
When we have a public domain again, maybe that will be a valid arguement.
You remember, the public domain? The place where copyrights used to go within periods of time whereupon a human could be born on the day a copyright is placed and would still be alive when the copyright expired?
They're the ones with US against the wall, and don't you EVER forget it.
Actually, I reserved a new video card this week. I decided on something with a bit less oomph than this though. Between my Geforce MXes and my super high end video cards, I've found that it's better to buy the cheap video card that'll last you maybe a year or two than to go all-out and get maybe a year or two out of it. (Hey, it's not raw power that neccessitates upgrades, it's Pixel Shaders 4.1, right around the corner!)
Many people have taken issue with your first comment, but let me take issue with the second, lest I simply parrot the masses.
The phone is actually a single massive loop, which is terminated at the phone company central office. When the phone is on the hook, a very high voltage DC potential just sits there. When the phone rings, the central office sends an AC voltage over the DC carrier wave, which actuates the ringers in the phones. When the phone is picked up, the mic and headphone piece close the DC circuit. The Central office then detects the current (Which is very small compared to the voltage because it's being sent through kilometers of phone line) and switches to "off hook" mode.
Now, the reason this is at all relevant is DSL signals also live on this set of lines. That's why you need to install line filters in your house. HOWEVER, the DSL line can't be a low resistance device like the telephone, or your phone would be off the hook whenever you plugged your DSL modem in. Since the DSL modem would have to be a high impedance device capable of sustaining the massive DC voltage mentioned earlier, I know that 24VDC wouldn't hurt a DSL modem, and even in the worst case scenario of a 120VAC line connected directly to the phone (and why exactly would phone connectors be so tiny, with so little protection from electrocution or short circuits, if a 120VAC line voltage was present?), I'm pretty sure the DSL modem still wouldn't care, since the phone ringing voltage is about 90VAC. Some day I'll have to grab an old DSL modem and test my theory regarding the 120VAC, but I don't need to regarding the 24VDC. The line voltage used to test whether a phone is off the hook or not is about twice that.
You CAN, but I've found almost universally that they don't. The game development cycle is too tight, multi-platform compatibility is too important, and codebases are simply too large to justify optimizing the living hell out of the code you've got.
And the new gaming PC I'm building costs less than the PS3, and other than perhaps 100 bucks for the chibi version of this monster when it comes out, I don't expect to have to do much to keep the system I'm building competitive with the PS3 in terms of playing a broad spectrum of recent games for the livespan of the machine.
You know, I remember being impressed that Duke Nukem 3d ran at 640x480. The point where you need 1902x1200 AND anti-aliasing is the point where you're just doing it to make fun of the people without a Geforce 8800.
You make an interesting point that I hadn't thought of before.
Are phone installations in such buildings generally 4-wire though? Since phones only use 2 wires, I've seen a lot of phone infastructure that only uses 2 wires...
When you are faced with the chance to frost prist, will YOU accept the challenge?
Yeah, sometimes it's not easy, determining something to write that isn't immediately obvious or retarded, but if you take the challenge, you will be part of one of an elite million or two, who have threads on the first page.
Is this story perhaps "320Mbps over coax", rather than over copper? If not, I don't see the accomplishment, since Gig ethernet has already done the same over copper...
The population growth rate in the first world isn't high at all. In fact, this generation has seen a lot of populations where fewer humans are being born than are dying in many places in the first world, resulting in a net loss. Immigration offsets this somewhat, but we really need to give some Africans and Asians some condoms.
So, no trees, no water, no crops, and no livestock which depend on those crops. No fish, no seafood. What, exactly, did you think your kids were going to eat?
The destitute people we're currently just using for slave labour.
Oh, those Africans are delicious. Not like Asians, their meat is all tough and stringy. Of course, you can get Chinese kids really cheap, so you know what's on my plate.
The reason firefighters fight forest fires is that they can endanger human cities if they burn out of control. Controlled burns happen quite often as a part of a coherent conservation strategy.
To some people, "We don't understand" isn't good enough.
Instead of deciding that things are simply unknowable, they decide to try to understand. These people discovered that common diseases were caused by tiny microbes called "viruses" and "bacteria", not by inscrutable demons. These people discovered that when you rubbed amber with certain substances to make them attract or repel objects, it was due to a defecit or surplus of tiny particles called 'electrons', not "we don't understand how or why". When it came to fire, these people didn't just say "You know, we don't understand it, nevermind", they tested combusion, and discovered some of the most important elements of modern chemistry by doing so.
Because of these people, the infant mortality rate is negligable, whereas only 4 generations ago, women had 6-10 kids and most of them died. We've got instantaneous communication around the world, whereas that same generation would have hired a horseman to deliver a message, and it would have arrived in weeks. Goods can be transported all around the world in a matter of days for a pittiance because of motor vehicles and planes, whereas that same generation might wait months for a package from overseas.
To live in this world and say "due to factors that we don't always understand" so nonchalantly is ridiculous. If we don't know, it is our duty as the descendants of the people who made our way of life possible to find out. Ignoring it because you don't know is a disgrace to your forefathers.
In this case, the real issues have been on the table for years. Currently the Cod industry in Atlantic Canada is nearly dead because the resource has been over exploited over centuries. This is a real problem, and real people are losing their jobs because of it. This study is just saying what anyone who has lost their job already knows.
On the other hand, I know for a fact that global warming exists too, because I'm 600km north of Winnipeg, and today our winters are comperable to Winnipeg today, but 20 years ago, the winters were really awful. My father drove down from Leaf Rapids Manitoba in weather that was below -150 with the windchill. Today, it's unlikely we'll get more than a couple days with lower than -40 real temperature, or lower than -50 with windchill.
The problem with people today is they don't care about history. If they did, there would be far fewer disputed facts between political groups.
You know, since the citizens of canada don't have a Democratic party.
Of course, there's the NDP, but if the Democrats piss you off, the NDP will make you die of hatred and pain. Twice. Then some social program will bring you back to life just so you can die again of the same things.
Yes, but if Jack Thompson is to be believed, the introduction of video games should be outstripping incremental changes in any other area for a large net increase, because it's a menace to society.
I understand your message, but it's not a boycott if you're using the product without paying for it. A boycott is saying "You know, there might be good features in this, it might be really nice, but I'm not going to use it, because you're doing something I find absolutely morally reprehensible."
That's why I stopped listening to music. I love music, but I can't bear to spend money that's going to be used to sue little old ladies for downloading music they couldn't possibly want to listen to.
Not by much. Assuming 5 day workweek at 8 hours a day, that works out to about 22 days work in a month, works out to about 8.60USD per day, or 1.02/hr.
And that's for a teacher, who is educated. If china is like most places, you can do a lot worse than being a teacher.
If this site is correct then you've got your exchange rate backwards, and a teacher makes about 189 US dollars per month. That's not very much...
When we have a public domain again, maybe that will be a valid arguement.
You remember, the public domain? The place where copyrights used to go within periods of time whereupon a human could be born on the day a copyright is placed and would still be alive when the copyright expired?

Anyone using qbasic, yes.
These are just video games. At some point, you're seriously facing diminishing returns for your $1200USD SLI 8800 rig.

It makes the other nerds think you've got a HUGE wang.

It's slashdot. If you expect me to apologize for extreme rhetoric and hubris, you're in for a long wait. :P
I don't understand what you're saying.

Wow these principles are tasty! Filling too!
(Oh wait... I'm DEAD. Because I lost my job because some guy on slashdot told me not to write compatible code, and I STARVED TO DEATH.)

I too am using a pirated copy of XP while my legitimate licensed copy of the same OS goes unused to avoid this tripe.
