    I can't believe it -- he was arrested for chatting with someone who *claimed* to be a minor? What a joke. I can't believe how far it's going. I believe you can't blame someone until they've actually commited something for real -- what do we know? A lot of people might be turned on by the idea of having with 13 yo (not me!), that does'nt mean that when the occasion actually arises they will do it. This is sickening. Roleplaying -- that's what chat room seem to about, isn't it? Now it's forbidden to play anything but some PC shit. Absurd.

To put post-its(tm) on pages, to be able to chat real time, based on the page you're currently browsing ... isn't that cool? That's really simple to implement ... now that we have source code ...

    Hey folks, look, there's over countries on the planet ... and they don't have the same problems. You hear of no such similar thing in Europe. But ... here in France 90% of the school are public. Only the super-rich or the super-bad go to private school. And violence, though a big problem, is not on the same order as in the US. So what's different? We don't have any such thing as the 2nd amendment. Here, only the neofascists advocate freeing gun owning. And since someone asked, yes, geeks are ostracized here too, but I guess it's to a much lesser extent. Anyhow, I sympathize dearly with the people quoted in Katz's article; especially since their writing skills are excellent (or did Katz edit them?), which is quite uncommon for (young) americans, even to non-natively english speaking person like me.

    What I'm saying is that meme-complexes are very loosely-defined entities with an almost organic quality,
    and trying to say, definitively, what one is or is not is a losing endeavor. It really does depend upon the
    specific subspecies of meme, and the generalization which you are advocating does not hold for all
    instances.

    When you say thta "there is no dogma of atheism", you are incorrect. It is possible for atheism to be held
    and propagated based upon shallow dogma. I know this to be true because I've met dogmatic atheists
    before.


    Yeah, there are atheists who are quite religious; but that does'nt make atheism any more of a religion. Like, there are atheists who have a job, but that does not make atheism a job description either.

    What a specious argument. You religious fanatics are trying to impose your views on us -- on abortion, on politics, and even on science (creationism!)

    People talk of the harm done by religion, but I think it is small compared with the good. Some thousands
    have been killed in religious wars, but many, many more have lived suffering from incurable disease,
    poverty, and oppression, and found religion their source of hope and solace.


    A good joint or Prozac can achieve the same ends, yunno.


    It is the nature of people to war over strongly held beliefs that conflict, whether or not those beliefs are
    religious.


    No one ever die of a KDE vs. Gnome flame war AFAIK.


    Blasphemy is fun.

    I just *hate* religion.
    It's just part of my genetic programming. I started coding around 10 y.o., but I *knew* I hated religion (as well as the militaries) when I was around 8 y.o. I was kicked out of sunday school because I told them it was "bullshit" (des conneries, in French).
    Religion is about manipulating people. Get to realize that. Stand up!

    I guess the point is, know what you're making, what they're willing to spend, and what you're really
    worth. I think the third point is the most important, since that can't be found on some survey sheet, and
    probably the hardest to find out.


    What you're really worth? Nope, it does'nt mean anything.


    Example: in France the most sought out engineers are those who come from "grandes ecoles", it's a bit like the Ivy League -- except that the teaching is not necessarily good, it's just hard to get in those. I've heard many stories of engineers coming from these and being utterly bad at their jobs. But they tend to be paid more.

    So who the fuck cares?
    Last time (when I was "kidnapped"), they asked me, "how much would you want". I said "I get that much, and I ain't gonna move if you don't offer anything more significant". They added 20%. I still have to send my resignation though.

    In France there's a trial going on right now of former ministers who deliberately allowed AIDS tainted
    blood to be used in transfusions to protect a French company while that company got its AIDS blood test
    together.


    The three ministries in question are accused of delaying the introduction of AIDS blood testings. Whether they did it or not, one thing is known for sure: the tests were used in France before many other countries anyway (including Germany and Switzerland, don't know about the U.S.)

    People will have an incentive to buy new cars that use less fuel. Companies will have incentive to produce cars that use less fuel.
    It's possible, with today's technology, to design car motors that use up to 10x less fuel. But since it's more expensive, and less powerful, people don't buy it.
