I'm glad they put some work on Linux, but I just don't get why they have to provide a whole distro. I'll stick to my French speaking Mandrake, thank you. Now, if they could just provide drivers for their funky controllers (what about the IRDa subsystem on my BE6? there is no doc on this).
Where can I get a free C++ compiler? Try Cygwin from Cygnus, Djgpp, or Borland5.5. All are aimed at Wintel boxes. These compilers are trying hard for ISO Standards compliance. Caveat: If you want to use "free" compilers for commercial work, be sure to read all legal rules and restrictions attached. There are a variety of old C++ implementations floating around on the web and on CDs. I do not recommend an old C++ compiler for learning C++ or for new production use. There is little gained by fighting your way through bugs that have been fixed years ago or limitations that have been lifted years ago by the standard committee. For good quality free (parts of) the standard library, see SGI's STL site and STLport.
This single FAQ entry seems to imply that Free Software sucks, that they are old, and only 'floating around', and that GNU/Linux would'nt be a decent platform for programming...
3rd press office in the world. Largely subsidised by the French govt, BTW, but that's (maybe?) another story. Well, they're at least somewhat reliable.
I saw it at the Virgin Megastore in Le Louvre, Paris. They sell zoneless DVD players. On top of that, it's about the only kind of appliance they sell there. I guess they do it in order to be able to import the films themselves. Note that Virgin is independent of any music / film distributor.
Many if not most of the famous soviet dissidents were atheists. (I might be wrong on this one, but I tend to remember that Andrej Sakkharov was an atheist).
Maybe I did'nt express myself properly... I'm talking about a random DNA sample matching a sample in the database (assuming that those are unique). In that case the likeklihood of a false positive reaches 1 when the database has 37 million entries.
This is so basic, I can't even believe it! I can't believe peoples lives are decided on such a weak mathematical basis!
If the chance of a match between two random DNA samples is 1/37.10^6, and they have 660000 samples in their database, then the likelihood -- assuming their system does'nt give false positives, which I doubt -- of a database match is... 1.78% !!! We don't know how much DNA tests they make each year, but it's porbably well over a thousand, wich leads to over 10 false positives a year!
Americans find that "mind blowing"? Minboggling stupidity, if you ask me
Pardon me, but I fail to see how source code to exploits is more available on Unix than on Windows? Last I checked, there were tons on L0pht's site, and others.
Fuck, I can't believe it, there are FLOODS of TROLLS cluttering Slashdot, and some anal moderators mod me down whereas my post IS informative AND related to the topic at hand. WHAT THE FUCK DOES THIS MEAN????
They don't even IMPLY, they STATE, they WROTE that having the source to the OS made it more vulnerable to this attack. IT IS AN ABSOLUTE **LIE**. It's not even a matter of opinion: it's my opinion, for instance, that having the source code is better, overall, from a security point of view. HOWEVER, saying that having the source code available makes Linux & Solaris more vulnerable (or, from what I understand, more likely to be used as hosts) to to DDOS attacks is a complete and unfounded LIE.
Doing DDOS does not require modifying the kernel; it can be done at the user level. On top of that, on Unix system, it generally requires root access (at least for faking addresses), whereas on Win9x, which does'nt have user levels, there is no such protection. This article is not just FUD, it's an utter and complete lie.
Check out Free, they are operating on Linux, offer 50 Mb hosting with PHP+MySQL, you can connect to their news server from any other ISP with your username/password.
Sign up online, but they send you the login info in the snail mail (thank the spammers for having to do that...).
I believe you can sign up completely online with Fnac.net, at least I did a while ago.
You're a troll. And you're wrong. The EU commission has annoyed a lot of big *European* companies for anticompetitive practices. Vodafone, for example, is being heavily investigated with its recent buyouts left and right. They are being forced to sell on of their cell phone operations in the UK, for instance.
There ought to be a backslash. Big Corps, including RIAA, MPAA and BSA and the likes, have been defaming and libelling users with such qualificative as "pirate", "thieves", etc..
It's time for payback. Whatever the outcome of this lawsuit is, it will bring the attention of the medias to this problem. At least people will start challenging those blatant lies, whereas, up until now, journalist would just copy word by word those insults. When was the last time you read an article in a mainstream journal showing a critical opinion on the "piracy" issue?
That's what I said to myself while reading this article. Science is going FAST! I would'nt have believed to have this made possible in at least 10 years, and here we have it!
The implications are enormous. On top of that, mechanized DNA analysis tool are becoming almost mainstream, and it's not too far before they will cost less than a big computer.
What next? That's probably the biggest question. What about having a slasdot interview of the guys who did this? That's HACKING dudes; think about it, it's comparable to the first dude who ever solved a chess problem on an electronic computer. Was that, what, 50 years ago? Think about the application we will have in that time frame.
At least once, and you should do it. Agence France Press (3rd largest press agency) wrote a strangely biased news release on their "multimedia" wire, calling Jon a "pirate", etc... I got an acknowledgement from AFP that they had sent my letter to the editor.. but no reply since then.
(I think I know why they are so one-sided on this issue: despite the fact that AFP is very liberal (I worked there), they are very supportive of IP "rights", as they think everybody is trying to rip them off. They don't seem to realize that their articles are worth their price mostly because of the news delivery SERVICE they provide, not so much because of the paranoid protection offered by violent IP laws and lawyers).
Slashdot is getting lame for other reasons -- mainly, because for some reason moderators are getting more and more anal retentive. More and more often, legitimate posts are moderated down in flames, just because they express a non "mainstream" (WRT to this medium) opinion, or because they're slightly offtopic. But being slightly offtopic can be useful, at times, to draw attention towards something related for example.
Is'nt it interesting to notice, for example, that if some demagogic "libertarian" invokes the Holocaust for the BILLIONth time in defence of the right to buy Uzis at the supermarket, he gets to +3 in minutes, whereas if you just slightly disagree that this is good idea, boom! Bye bye, Karma.
And I guess this is a self fulfilling prophecy... reload and watch my score...
I started working for a pennyless startup. We had to work with cheap software. I preferred to work with libre software, so I claimed to use it for its price. Despite being technically knowledgeable, they believed that free == bad quality. Ah ah. Good one. Then my expertise started being noticed around by the people / companies we worked for / with. So I was asked to provide tech. solutions, and I would always "sell" them free software solutions. Simple.
I work for a small dot com company currently. I'm the tech head. I decide what to do / pick.

I quote your FAQ:

I checked, it's on the AFP wire. Not exactly a tabloid. (Disclaimer: I used to work there)

an enormous (£101) approx $160/year tax on every television set
Do they still play "Neighbours"? If they do, sounds like a good deal to me. Huh huh.
Imagine the following scenario:
Now, had FSP patented X, they could have defended themselves agains EvilCorp.

Because I believe in Free Speech, not in Free Beer, smart ass.
It seems to me that every OSS license has this sort of provision already.

Get a clue: what Corel is doing with wine is to use it as libwine, to ease the porting, so they don't have to reimplement everything.
