If they really are the leading supplier of cookies, I think this is a golden opportunity for Girl Scouts of America to buy them out. Imagine the possibilities for increased profits!

That's not true. The smallest counterexample is:

    2*3*5*7*11*13 + 1 = 59 * 509

Adding one to the product of the primes up to n only guarantees no prime factors less than or equal to n. That's why Euclid's proof works; he assumed that there simply were no larger primes, and showed that his assumption was incorrect.

I also have a Lite-on CDRW drive, though a 32x12x40 one. I was moving my drives around when I removed my DVD drive for repairs, and the thing just wouldn't separate from the IDE cable. A tug later, it detached and ended up on the other end of the room. Still works perfectly. They really do make tough drives!

I disagree. Does anyone remember RBI Baseball? It wasn't an official Nintendo game or something like that (Nintendo Power refused to take tips about it), but it was great. All the players looked the same except for skin color, ran by having rectangular legs shrink and expand, and could (under the right circumstances) run into the bleachers. You could, in a season, watch the scoreboard (and nothing else) as two CPU teams played each other. Unintentionally funny sound effects, all your favorite late-80s baseball players -- what more could you want?

  10. Re:Depends... on What's A Good Starter Linux distro? · · Score: 1

Before I started using Linux for personal use (other than for classes in my high school's computer systems lab), I started attending the weekly student system administrator meetings, since the students run the systems lab (for a high school, this is certainly a rare opportunity). Fortunately, the lab used Slackware and I got my intro to Linux with it, but even better was the resource of learning from students who already knew it.

Once I finally got a new hard drive for my machine, I immediately installed Slackware on it. Sure, it was bare bones, but I have already learned tons more about Linux as a result than what I did from the meetings alone, and I also learned more than I might have with an easier distro full of nice GUIs. As long as you're willing to do some research and learning first (and have people who can help you learn), I think Slackware is a great distro to start with.

Keep in mind that you'll probably get stuck once or twice regardless of what distro you choose. Whatever problems you may have had, chances are someone else had them first; always keep places like linuxdocs.org (also included with distros as the HOWTOs) and other such help sites and discussion forums bookmarked. It may take a few tries to get everything installed the way you want/need it, but it'll run smoothly after that and you'll start to be able to fix things on your own without outside help.

  11. Re:Verizon DSL is NOT THAT EVIL on Broadband Crackdown · · Score: 3, Interesting

I'm a Verizon DSL user. My brother and I just got off the phone with tech support. First they tried to convince us that hosting a web server was illegal (after we convinced them that we had seen the ToS which says DSL users are exempt); after about ten minutes of arguing that was changed to "We don't support that." Then they told us that they would not open port 80 for specific machines, and that they would not even tell us ANY details about other ports (like the mysterious 25). I hope to call back later and speak to someone a bit more helpful...

As for why we learned about the port closing from /. long before we heard about it from verizon in a vaguely worded, hidden post, they told us that they didn't send an email because it only affects about 5% of their customers. They also won't notify us when they reopen port 80, however distant that may be. Furthermore, they claim that the vast majority of users who would receive such an email would not care. Still, if I were the average user I certainly would rather hear service/security updates I can ignore than miss ones that might be relevant.

Conclusion: Verizon is at least approaching Evil, if not already there... please let me know if you've had any better experiences with tech support since the start of the filtering!
