Yep, the point your missing is that the Xbox has high quality interlaced NTSC/PAL (depending where you live!) output built in. Most cheap pc video card hardware isn't capable of outputting a comparable quality signal to a television.

Cool, I'll have to make an effort and give that a go. Also I want to try advance mame using the svgalib driver, all this is a perfect excuse to put off a little bit more work;-)
Read the article again. It clearly states that the source of the website was changed after the word got out that he was using the software illegally. Whoever designed the website was supposed to inform Milonic of its existance and according to Milonic they were never informed, nor was any any mention of a valid licence visible in the source of Senator Hatch's website. Therefore it was in infringement of the licence.
Well, on my laptop dos/windows mame is a lot faster than the linux version. Its a celeron 433 and I can play neo-geo games at full speed under dos or windows but can only manage 15fps using the xview video driver under linux. Of course its probably just the unoptimised trident cyberblade xfree drivers holding performance back. Haven't had time to other methods. Also I have a nice big powerful (at least in comparison!) Athlon desktop system with Radeon 9000 pro. Linux mame rocks in that:-)
The next version of office (.net or whatever its eventually called) will have file formats based on xml. People who have had a chance to play around with beta versions have found that it really does output very clean and open xml. So no worries about file incompatabilities anymore. Its a strategic shift on Microsoft's part, having an open format so as to tie in with their database driven file system that will be introduced with Longhorn.
If you know anything about java script you can see that the sample given isn't a security exploit. All it does is load up that security site's page in a popup window while counting down a timeout before redirecting to the page outputted from the javascipt. (That "werd" page). Read the article! Its bogus.

You have to make sure you download the gcc 3.2 compiled version of Blackdown Java, otherwise you'll get the same error again.
