  1. Re:Wondering on Dorm Storm? · · Score: 1

I'm a student at this particular large southern university myself, and I'm pretty involved in technology issues... The big thing about the routers and infrastructure being tested is that we're in the process of upgrading our entire network in addition to adding the wireless and other technologies. If we had equipment that had been around for a while, then no problem, but some of this stuff hasn't even come close to being tested under typical fall / spring loads. With our previous problems with BearShare, Napster, etc, our admins have a reason to be stressed. (We even had a DS-3 installed specifically for the residence halls after the main DS-3 was maxed out. The new one quickly hit 100% utilization. And that's not peak, that's constant.) The problem with the main post is that the admin didn't necessarily elaborate, for brevity's sake. Well, I hope this maybe clears things up a little bit.

  2. From someone (sort-of) in the know... on SETI@Home A Security Threat, Says TVA · · Score: 1

Just so you know, I'm an intern working with some UNIX sysadmins at TVA this summer... Okay, folks, I understand the whole issue with SETI not being a huge security risk, but everyone who mentioned that it's a business decision is right. It's a clear violation of stated policy (see Communications practices 7 and eight). Overall, they're pretty good about personal use of the net. Basically, the standard is the same as a personal phone call, i.e. as long as it doesn't interfere with work. Yeah, desktops are pretty much locked down, EXCEPT for the screen savers... they figure people will know enough not to violate policy. Of course, even some IT managers don't listen, but that's another story. So, before everyone goes nuts over this, keep in mind that we're talking about the IG of the Agency, not necessarily an admin who knows the "right" words to use when talking to other computer folks. They mean well :). Of course, that's just my opinion.

  3. Re:So? on Georgia Tech Implements Wireless Campus Net · · Score: 1

Heck, even "good 'ole Rocky Top" has it. Yes sir, the University of Tennessee Knoxville campus is implementing a campus-wide wireless initiative. Currently, the school of Information Science, the Computer Science Building, the MBA program, the Library, and the University Center are wireless-capable, with more on the way. If you want to check it out, head to the VolNet site. Enjoy. -AC

  4. Internet 2 Myths... on Whatever Happened to Internet II? · · Score: 1

Folks, I just wanted to try to clear up some confusion. As a student at an Internet 2 institution (yes, we know how to use computers down south! :)), I think I can help a little bit.

First, Internet 2 is not necessarily a general-purpose network. It is used primarily for research in high-performance computing and really cool stuff like telemedicine and video multicast conferences.

Second, you can't get pr0n or mp3's or things like that from the network unless they're hosted at a member institution's site. You can't connect to the regular internet from I2. Can you imagine NCSA hosting the most realistic "virtual girlfriend" simulation? Well, okay, maybe not a great example :).

Third, the new applications and experience gained from Internet 2 could be well applied in the future on the Next generation Internet. This is where regular folks can get the advantages of a high-speed network and maybe not even know it.

Of course, I'm crazy about anything that's new and "neat," as I'm sure most people reading this are. However, I can't wait to (maybe, just maybe) get to work with this project and help develop things that might lead to better science, better global connections, and Quake II games that don't slow down... er.. anyway. -AC

  5. One of the possible experiments on New Heavy Ion Collider could "destroy the earth" · · Score: 1

I noticed this, and it struck a chord with me. My physics professor and TA from last year are both working on this project in a section called PHENIX. (See, we do more at the University of Tennessee than play football!! :)) They're searching for evidence of what the universe was like just seconds after the big bang and verifying theories on the type of matter existed... if I remember correctly, it was something like "Quark-gluon plasma." If you want to know a little more about this particular area, check out http://uther1.phy.ornl.gov/experiments/phenix.html and/or http://www.rhic.bnl.gov which is the collider group's homepage. Hope this helps out with a little of the confusion :). Go Vols! -Allen Cain

Just thought I'd add a little comment... Dr. Jack Dongarra is a Distinguished Professor of Computer Science and the University of Tennessee and Oak Ridge National Labs. He also runs (or co-runs, I can't remember exactly, at the moment) Netlib, one of the co-sponsoring agencies of the Top 500... Just thought I'd say Go Vols! :)

I've actually run the program on both Linux and Windows using Navigator. For some reason, I get better marks under Win98.. It may be because of something I did wrong under Linux, but I don't know. Any takers?
