No a bicycle is a 200 year old device that uses the laws of physics to remain naturally stable in motion and the laws of 'your foot' to remain naturally stable when stopped, it can travel at a range of useful speeds, requires no fuel and apart from pissing off drivers it can pretty much get around most cities without a big re-design, although a bicycle lane is an advantage. What will happen is we will get to the stage where there will be a normal lane, a fire lane, a bus lane, a bicycle lane, a segway lane (because they are too slow to go with bikes) and a "2 wheeled computer balanced transportation device that is not allowed to use the name segway for copyright reasons" lane, is this really what you want??
I think when Steve Jobs said that it would change the way we build cities, he was right. We HAVE to change the way we buld cities because it won't fit in any current cities. We'd need extra lanes to handle the traffic.
Nah, i dont want to sound flamebaiting and trolling but really, maybe we should just not change the way we build cities and instead just forget about this fad, im sure it could find a niche market in the circus and maybe as a novelty for tourists to rent, but really, as a revolutionary transportation device? its crap! And if i see one on the road i will try and run it over.
Is there any way to get compensation if the manufacturer actually stated a life-span? even if they carefully worded it "up-to 100 years" its still misleading! Im sure we've all had carefully treated CD's fail for no reason and it varies between brand. Some CD's even explode when spun too fast (well actually all CD's explode when spun too fast but some at low speeds!) If you buy a generic brand with no markings on it do you still have consumer rights? has anyone actually been pissed off so much that they tried to get compensation? what happened?
A simulation modeling all of this would pretty much have to have fully-destructible environments.
Kinda like the Red-Faction engine? i think all games need to have proper damage modelling, it takes you totally out of the game when you fire a big hefty rocket launcher at something and you see just a cheap decal of a black mark! and for a tactical simulation involving explosives or tactics like you say, its just a requirement! it seems to me a very lazy plot design in any game to give you such a weapon and yet not allow you past a locked wooden door. If the army was to come up with a decent engine im sure it would pay-off and be used in other games!
Im sick of people whining about how unfair this is, these kids were operating an illigal business, they were pirating CD's and DVD's in the 1000's and peddling child pornography! Not only that, but in the same school another gang had actually used school chemistry labs as meth labs and were selling to kids as young as 14! This alarming news becomes even more shocking as the raid uncovered two more illigal operations in the school - one involved prostitution by some of the cheerleading squad and another: a small arms dealing ring! Yes guns were being traded! this could have easily turned into another columbine and is just a simply shocking example of the state of the school system. People are saying "Hey the FBI used extreme force on childeren" WTF? some of these kids were ARMED themselves! I think the FBI should be commended on bringing this thing down with no casualties and giving these kids the counceling they need and a real chance at a new life. wait sorry, what? only kazaa and afew cds? oops
What can really give you an advantage is knowing a 'map' if soldiers could run around in a virtual mockup of a real city they would naturally learn the map before they fight in it for real, it would be a big advantage knowing where to find cover and tactical positions, not to mention where all the power-ups are! Im guessing one of the reasons the forces in iraq arnt doing so well is that the other side (lets not get into who they are and weather they're right or wrong) knows the terrain and all the allys and connections between buildings much better than any foreign force, but how do you map out things like that?
AFIC the W3C team are gods of standards and should be incharge, they should also be incharge of the entire world! These people are not recognised for their work and instead people implementing W3C standards go out of their way to totally screw it up and negate the entire point of it - HTML & CSS is a perfect example of this, VRML its true is old but they are working on the next thing already, these guys pretty much cover every corner and while their standards might seem hard to figure out at first but when you finally do get it its like a high and zen enlightenment!
How important do you guys think a degree is? You can get a great degree but still know jack all about the subject to the point of barely understanding the concept of variables! (that example from a real life encounter), but you can also get a pretty bad degree but actually understand your subject. So how would that factor into salary? I'm soon to graduate (touch wood) and i reckon (not trying to be too full of myself) i could sit someone down at a computer and give them a task and judge within 10 minutes if they were a 1337 h4x0r or.. well.. someone who shouldnt have passed, throw in something strange and see how they deal with learning new things, hell even asking someone to pick variable/function/file names can give you an insight into their way of thinking and working! So would this apply to real life applications or would an employer just look at qualifications? im guessing there are good interviews and PHB interviewers out there? my current job was luckely "show us what you can do" but i have no idea what to expect outside that? All i do know is that working has been 100x more useful than listening to lectures.
Thats the most wonderful business model ive ever heard of - charge for ports:P i hope you took advantage and tunneled web traffic through without paying?
Yep those drivers i downloaded _were_ from the manufacturer and they were still a hassle requiring a whole ton of reading and fiddling, now after learning as much as i can about them and ppp and pppoa, if they dont work after following the instructions what am i supposed to do? sure i could spend a couple of weeks learning even more and maybe i would eventually fix the problem and learn allot at the same time, but id call that 'not working'.
True but surely a most sound cards (and other hardware) in this day and age should be configurable pretty automatically, unless you want to tweek stuff.
Often a distro will say it does autodetection, but then something goes wrong - for example trying to get adsl up on mandrake - it detects the modem, tells me the right model name, says its trying to connect then says it can't without so much as an error code (its called a user friendly interface), so that leads me into 20 pages of readme's, downloading and building drivers from the manufacturer, looking at obscure config files and next thing you know 2 days have passed, meanwhile windows drivers install in 10 seconds, and it works.
I'd hardly call it an achilles heel, Linux has such crap hardware support because hardware companies just dont support it! Even companies that do support it often do it badly, if your fighting deadlines to get a sound card to market and the boss is on your back your gonna give priority to windows - where most of your customers come from. Ok so not all hardware isnt supported, but you better make damn sure before you buy something that it _is_ supported and that means checking forums, because if it isnt your gonna be screwed, personally ive had most problems with a Diamond S90 (vortex) sound card, a VIA apollo chipset and a Sagem F@st 800 USB ADSL modem.
However the most popular and best hardware is often supported, what would really help is a central regularly updated list/forum to say what actually does and doesnt work and whos tried it.
Where settlement, read 'Microsoft agrees to give away some of its products (which it will claim are worth a total of severl billion dollars when really its plastic and amounts to potential lost sales) to schools where it hopes to lock in students at an early age (i.e those lost sales are actually an investment at Microsofts advantage).' - for example whats better: give 10,000 copies of office to schools as part of a settlement, or give 10,000 copies of OpenOffice (essentially identical) to schools and Microsoft can give a sum of money to someone else?
Speaking of viagra, a shameless attempt at off-topic karma whoring: check out what happened when Macromedia asked Matt Stone and Trey Parker to come up with some content for them, i just wish i could have seen their faces when they watched this: here and here (free registration needed:\)
Im not trying to imply that they would invade another country (unless corporations now hire armies beyond guys in RIAA jackets), but they certainly influence american politicians far too much, american politicians then go on to push their crap - just take a look at the so called 'free-trade' bullshit thats going around lately, making sure other countries impose american laws so their corporations can maximise profits, the DMCA may be an american law but its already being pushed on other countries and continents including europe, im fucking sick of it.
Maybe, but thats not how management works: the legal departments lawyers see this and think "hmm big case, money" and then they make a presentation to the higher management featuring plenty of buzzwords including 'violation, intellectual property, copyright, stealing and terrorism' the management has no idea whats going on so they say "yeah heres some money fix it" The fact that this probably isnt even a DMCA violation doesnt matter, they are a big corporation and therefore they are _always_ right, even if they cant find a law to cover it they will still win, they'll probably just use the chewbacca defense (yeah there are similarly stupid things in real life that get pulled off in court).

Theres no back seat! :P
Has anyone else wondered what will happen when it becomes truly simple for EVERYONE to make movies, games, music etc?
The RIAA and MPAA will demand royalties from everyone from what they will call their 'creative expression patent'

The format has nothing to do with rendering speed, once its loaded into the program its stored in the programs own way.
Interesting that they would choose two lossy media formats as models for comparison.
floating point?
In soviet russia, bombs defuse robots!
I don't think anyone has actually seen the project to comment about it, i dont even know how the weapon works!?

Wow is that all? id have said around 90% is spam, unless you count those for-every-thing-else-theres-mastercard emails then its more like 97% :P
