  1. Re:Use the source Luke! on What's A Good Way To Handle Multiple /dev/dsp's? · · Score: 1

Or edit the binary. Load up the binary into emacs, then search for /dev/dsp - make sure emacs is in overwrite mode and change it to "/dev/ds2" - you cant make it /dev/dsp2 because that would change the length of the binary and probably break it.

Now make /dev/ds2 as a symlink to /dev/dsp2. Sorted.

Make a backup of the binary first of course...

  2. Re:Perl Haiku Contest on Can You Create An Intelligent Haiku Generator? · · Score: 2

I figured Perl would be a good language for writing a Haiku generator, so I popped over to CPAN to see what modules could help count syllables. Ah ha. Lingua::EN::Syllable

    Read the docs:

"It guesses correctly about 80-90% of the time,
but it's smaller and faster than a dictionary
lookup. So you can't really use it for
    writing random haiku."

  4. Re:Linux enters the mainstream? on Gnutella VBS Worm · · Score: 1

Hehe. Of course you could always rewrite this vbs file as a shell script. The trick is getting people to run it. With Windows its there in the folder, looks executable, you double click it. Bang bang bye bye hard disk.

But with the increasing use of desktop file managers like that with Gnome and KDE, you could run a shell script virus downloaded from Gnutella just as easily. All it would take is for your umask, or your application, to be set to add execute permissions to files.

Could even be a trojan, a gzexe-compressed shell script that seemingly does something else. Be vigilant - linux viruses/worms are coming!

  5. Everyone go watch "The Net" again... on Microsoft Develops Security-Path for Outlook · · Score: 1

..especially Microsoft. Not only do you see Sandra Bullock in a swimsuit, but you also see what closed-source security solutions might be setting you up for. World domination by the back door. It was shown recently on UK TV and it seemed so appropriate. If the GateKeeper software had been open source then the backdoors would have been spotted, the bad guys wouldn't have had a chance, and Sandra wouldn't have had to wear that swimsuit. Oh, maybe there's a good side to closed-source...

Anyway, serious point - closed source, bad for security. Sorry if I'm preaching to the converted.

  6. Mushroom cloud? on U.S. Had Plan To Nuke The Moon · · Score: 1

I'm no expert in fluid mechanics, but my intuition tells me that the mushroom cloud in a nuclear explosion (or any explosion for that matter) is caused by the interaction of the material picked up by the bomb and the atmosphere in which the explosion takes place. In which case I dont see how the Air Force could get their mushroom cloud visible from earth!

I suspect a bomb exploded on or below the surface would produce a plume rather than a dome, something like the volcanoes on Io.

Also, remember one or two scientists on the first A-bomb project were worried that the explosion would ignite all the oxygen in the atmosphere? Good reason to test on the moon :)

See the MGR-Howto on any good linux doc site. It's one of the things that came out of Bellcore's labs.

NeWS was another Sun thing, post SunView. I remember someone in the corridor asking me 'Hey Baz, whats news?' and being flummoxed by my response of 'Network Extensible Windowing System'. And if they'd said "What's new?" I would have said "13th letter of the Greek alphabet".

The UK newspaper The Guardian had an article on this - here - with some details on the method - basically work out the average amount of beer taken up by the tache per sip, the average amount of sips per pint, and the average number of pints per year. Hence the way to minimise the loss is either:
    • Take fewer sips. Encourage your bearded friends to do this by shouting 'down in one!'.
    • Take less time between sips. This means that the beard is already saturated and absorbs no more beer. Encourage your bearded friends to do this by shouting 'drink!' &lt/Father Ted&gt

Do they mean 'scan all email for pornographic images'? That'll be hard. Ask them for a list of all filenames that are pornographic images. Or a list of key words that aren't allowed in file names. Then email someone a picture of the lovely English town of Scunthorpe.

I honestly dont see how its practical, without some sort of tool for recognising large amounts of flesh-tones in images. Maybe such a thing exists, but anyway, you go tell the suits you need more information. Write them a long memo.
