Some loan companies (especially mortgages) require the recipient to have a land line.
In the event of a natural disaster a land line might be more reliable than a cell phone. Cell towers can be taken out while phone lines are buried. Even when your power is out, you might still be able to make a land-line call because their system is powered separately.
