  1. Great Movie on Review: Orange County · · Score: 1
I saw the movie myself last night. Surprisingly, Katz didn't make a jerk of himself -- I agree with most of his review! I especially liked the movie because it wasn't just a plotless comedy... it had depth. Jack Black was absolutely hilarious, he fits the role well.

The part I had a hard time with is how the husband divorced his other wife so quickly, it was amusing but rather disturbing. I found the ending very hilarious, when they decide to commemorate Lonnie. I'd give this at least 4 and half stars.

No, what is even easier than that is to symlink the content you want without editing any config files, or opening a GUI dialog box. How's this for easy?

    ln -s ~/photos/ ~/web/kputnam/

There is no need to edit configuration files or open any GUI configuration tool to share otherwise offline content.

  3. Re:Won't see it. on Review: Harry Potter · · Score: 1

While I agree with this, I personally didn't find any of the jokes particularly funny. The people behind me (I had to sit in the very front row, ugh) chuckled slightly, but nothing more. I know it is a fantasy, but good humor brightens things up for those of us who weren't really entertained by the movie's plot (namely, me)

I haven't seen that one, but I have seen a similar one to what you describe, only it is for Windows XP. It is a FLASH movie that shows that stupid green grass, blue sky overall happy scenery with flying words telling you how much easier it will make life. The ad was at zdnet, if I recall correctly...

Parent needs to be modded up!

Just as I was about to compose a letter to the DOJ related email address, I was thinking "this is just going to be deleted or laughed at". Then I scrolled down on the comments page and read people saying how most emails wont come from lawyers, and how it will all be deleted because our points aren't valid.

I scrolled down some more and read the parent comment and it was enlightening to know that someone is actually able to tell between the damned lies that the suits can afford big-bad lawyers and the truth. I guess I haven't given enough credit to the judicial system, but this case reminds me too much of the OJ Simpson trial...

  6. Re:Why all the bloat?! on Evolution 0.99, Release Candidate Out · · Score: 1

You complain about the size of the code, yet I don't think you claimed to have ever run Evolution. And little do you know, the whole program is compartmentalized. There are components for the calendar, email program, contacts, and every part of the whole application.

With your logic, the Linux kernel is extraordinarily bloated... I mean there must be millions of lines of code. And it doesn't matter that it's all subdivided into drivers, core internals, and file systems... it simple has too many lines of code. Perhaps you should switch to MINIX if you are a true believer in your apparent "logic".

I'll give credit to Microsoft for trying to please everyone... but I take it back again because they are trying to please everyone (or at least their PR dept would like us to think so).

I think Microsoft would be better off if they weren't such an anticompetitive company, and didn't have products ranging from "enterprise level" operating systems to video game consoles to hand held personal operating systems.

Maybe what Microsoft should do is to stop trying to monopolize every market and just specialize in one. And of course that will never happen, but they should be shipping products with highest or near highest security settings in either case.

I feel very strongly that Microsoft should be focused in on making quality products for a single market (two or three would be okay, too) instead of trying to be the All In Once Slice and Dice For Every Thinkable IT Situation Possible (tm). And lastly, be it redundant or not, Microsoft does need to drop dead, or at least stop making crappy software :)

I think he meant that they are instantiated as new threads in existing processes. Just because you don't see more than one process running doesn't mean it didn't recreate a user specific part of the kernel. And perhaps those 100+ rights in Windows NT are the cause of all the insecurities -- administrators are overwhelmed. And when nearly all Microsoft products ship with the LEAST secure settings, what's an MSCE to do?

  9. Re:But will MS really break backwards compatibilit on MS getting rid of SAMBA? · · Score: 1

Judging from their past decisions... I'd say they wouldn't. Recall that Windows NT and 2000 use the old LANMAN hash from the days of LanManager... which was around when DOS was. Although keeping the LANMAN hash severely reduces the security of its other password hash, they STILL left it in.... Likely they will do the same to keep 95/98/2K/ME compatability.

  10. MP3 to Ogg? on Who'll Be Using Ogg Vorbis Instead Of MP3? · · Score: 1
I get all of my music from the online "music communities", mostly OpenNap. There is a single server on the "OggVorbis" network, but I still find that it's mostly MP3 format.

So far I haven't been able to find an MP3->Ogg converter for Unix/Linux... if there one listed on http://vorbis.org I'm sure Ogg would be a much more widely used format.

I'll probably end up finding an MP3->WAV converter and then using oggenc from there... sigh =\
