  1. Thailand, When I was there Dec the price... on Windows XP Starter Edition off to Slow Start · · Score: 2, Informative

I went to Pantip plaza to buy a legit copy of XP for my wifes family, they are using winme. I remember reading somewhere the price would be about $30 which is nothing for an American, dinner for four is more expensive. The lowest price I was quoted was $68. The end of the story is it is far to costly for Thai's, when my wifes siblings make from $200-400 a month at the factory or building construction. I just installed BitDefender and unplugged the computer from the phone.

I now just take parts over and build machines for famly and friends. I leave the drivers for windows and tell them install the OS yourself.

Now if I could keep the bugs and lizards out of the powersupplies.

  2. Lease at cost is Wrong, no future infrastructure on FCC Abandons Linesharing, Kills DSL Competition · · Score: 1

I live in Fairbanks, Alaska. I was talking to a friend recently who told me the following story. His friend a tech at the local Telco was told not to install or upgrade any of the equipment, no new lines, nothing. They are doing a slowdown so they can kill the regulations up here that requires them to sell their infrastructure at cost.

The complaint is every time they upgrade or expand the competitor just comes into the new area and takes the customers. Problem being that the competitor does not install any infrastructure.

I would be for the competitor coming in and getting the service at cost + 1% that can only go into future infrastructure/upgrades.

I live only 5 minutes from our local university and I can not get cable or DSL. I have been signed up for two years. I have friends who last summer were told the whole summer the equipment was in and would be installed next week so their area would have DSL. In the end it never came and they were only told again it will be installed next week, now it is next spring.

We have a monoply up here, and a leach. I would like some real progress and service.

  5. Just release the hardware... (with buggy soft) on Indrema No More · · Score: 1

I think they should have done a limited release (for hackers) release of the hardware and bundled it with the buggy software, dvd player, os with what patches they had. All that for $300+shipping and I might have bought one to hack on. Perhapse it would gain a following. Of course $300 may not have been enought to cover hardware. Open source your code. Or at least sell your offical DVD playing software. Gunk

I personaly loved Q2 and Doom. However Q3 for me blured quake and doom. If they stuck with Q3 flavor and then released a mod to make it into D3 I would have bought it. I am waiting for Tribes for Linux and if they stay true to the storyline I will buy it.

I with they would also provide the binarys for each on one cd and you can register online while indicating what OS you bought it for.

At same time I have to say hand in there until Linux stablizes on distribution and support, I understand it can be a pain to support all the brands. rob

I think more people should work on donating to schools. I don't care if it is where you are or overseas. I personally am working on a project to give old computers to people in Thailand. They have to provide monitor, keyboard and speakers themself. I provide computer, P75 or higher. I promote Linux but they can provide alternet OS themself. I wish more people would help others. There are a lot of people who need education and want it. Why deprive them when there are others who waste their future. Rob

I would prefre laptops in the long run.
