I, too, spend time on IRC, and am constantly frustrated by splits, variances in service or access, and being unable to stay connected. It would be nice to be able to somehow integrate the IRC protocol into the browser, if for no other reason than convenience. And it's a damn sight better than either AIM or ICQ. Bleah.
Amazing how long it seems to take the mainstream press and corporate pundits to realize concepts that our community pretty much takes for granted. For one, knowledge, especially computer-related, can never hurt you, but only help you. So what if you don't use it directly at work? It's the concepts, and the exercise of your mind, that's really important. And since industry generally follows the bucks in any situation, I think linux specifically and Open Source in general will continue to become more viable contenders in the corporate IT realm. (But of course, you already knew this...)
As would be expected, artists are seeing the benefits of mp3 and internet-based distribution long before the recording companies. After all, who wants to pay large slices of their profits in licensing fees and other schmuck to some faceless PR mega-institution. Here's a story About Ice-T's newest single that he's releasing over the net in mp3 format. Interesting that rap artists seem to be some of the more vocal supporters of mp3 and free distribution. I may have to start listening to more rap music...
"We need to be more than a domain name company," said Douglas Wolford, NSI executive vice president. "We believe we are the operating system for the Internet." I've heard a lot of pompous BS masquerading as mission statements in my time, but this one takes the cake. This is even less connected to reality than the usual PR snowjob companies release to the press. It's too bad we can't give people like this a reality injection and watch them squirm as they realize their own ignorance. I, for one, intend to wait until I can by my domain from someone OTHER than NSI. I've waited this long, after all...
Thanks for that mirror - quite speedy.

Exactly what I was attempting to say earlier - and mangled doing so. =) "Well spoken, sir." -- Count Roogan in The Princess Bride
