This morning on my way to work I bought copy of Linux Format to read on the train (LXF28 June 2002). On page 8 (Linux Webwatch) was a section on creating music on Linux which included a few interesting links.
Ardour - record 24 or more channels of 32-bit audio at 48kHz
TK-707 - a soft drum machine based on Roland's precursor to the legendary 808
Slab - another audio recording tool that consists of a virtual tape deck, a mixer, a wave editor and some audio mixing tools.
Open Music This project provides a spectrum of Licenses for musicians to realease their music under (influensed by the GPL).
The interesting thing is that I'm not sure what would happen if you made a copy of IE using the IEAK that contained a custom UA string that had the word "Opera 5" in it. I wonder if it'd get blocked too.:)
If you do this by using a utility like utility like The Proxomiton, IE displays the same error message! See here for an example of this.
Furthermore, if you use the same utility on Opera 5 to alter the UA from 'Opera' to 'OpXra' MSN will actually display pretty much as expected. Admitadley, it doesn't display exactly the same as IE normally displays but it is very similar and completely usable.
Microsoft are clearly targetting specific browsers which I think is very wrong! What about people who can't use IE because of having old hardware (and hence use a less resource intensive browser), the 'wrong' OS or disabled users who rely on browsers like BLynx???
Surely these users should be allowed to eXPerience the 'joys' of MSN. If Microsoft truely believe that you can only really appreciate how good MSN is with IE, then have a disclaimer appear at the top of the page when a so called 'non-complient' browser accesses your website but don't stop people accessing altogether!!!

Make no mistake only by reading this book can you fully understand what this man achieved.
Firstly as far as history documents he had no formal training. He built clocks that were superior by orders of magnitude. And in order to achieve this he had to invent many of the components from scratch. I'm sure many of you will be surprised to know that this guy even invented the ball bareing in an atempt to make his clocks more friction free. Only when you read the book do you really understand the impact this man has had on modern living.

I saw the BBC documentary and I have read this book and I can assure you that the book is far more interesting. While I agree with Timothy that there should have been more detail (not really a critisism for a book to want you needing more) it is a really fascinating account of the race to discover an accurate method for calculating longitude.
They're just using browser technologies (XML, DHTML, JavaScript) to write computer games.
It's not as big a deal as many of you are making out. People have been doing this for a while now. Did any of you check out the link? There are some excellent examples of JavaScript games here. Check out Art Run (Out Run clone) in Netscape. Truly amazing when you consider it's just JavaScript and Layers (note: I have only tried this in the Windows version).
Anyway don't get annoyed at these guys they're just having a bit of fun and learning the capabilities of the various technologies.
I doubt this is slowing down the Mozilla development. If anything it is probably speeding it up because only when you start doing really obscure things with a piece of software do you find out the limitations and bugs.
If you don't agree with what they are doing, remember that most of these guys are just working on Mozilla in thier spare time; they are under no obligation to do "Proper" work on Mozilla. If you don't like it maybe you should start helping out the Mozilla effort yourself rather than just complaining. (Unless you already are a Mozilla developer!;-).
ESR believes passionately in Open source and I see nothing wrong with that. Why do you mock someone how has worked so hard for the Linux community! And anyway I think you'll find he runs Red Hat.
Sorry to be pedantic but if you actually read the Yahoo article it specifically says, "The new combined company, to be called Corel...." and anyway wouldn't that be Corel-Inprise-Borland?
I really like SGI. They really are very helpful to the Linux community. They have now released two great things to Open Source and they have such a respected name that they are adding credibility to the whole movement. I hope they keep up the good work!

According to research firm IDC, a 2001 survey of 800 North American and Western European companies found that 40% of the respondents were either using or testing Linux in their organizations. Effectively, the four companies involved in this process will shift dollars and resources once allocated to creating and maintaining custom Linux operating environments and divert them to new R&D on Linux enterprise software. This morning on my way to work I bought copy of Linux Format to read on the train (LXF28 June 2002). On page 8 (Linux Webwatch) was a section on creating music on Linux which included a few interesting links.
Ardour - record 24 or more channels of 32-bit audio at 48kHz
TK-707 - a soft drum machine based on Roland's precursor to the legendary 808
Slab - another audio recording tool that consists of a virtual tape deck, a mixer, a wave editor and some audio mixing tools.
Open Music This project provides a spectrum of Licenses for musicians to realease their music under (influensed by the GPL).
If you do this by using a utility like utility like The Proxomiton, IE displays the same error message! See here for an example of this.
Furthermore, if you use the same utility on Opera 5 to alter the UA from 'Opera' to 'OpXra' MSN will actually display pretty much as expected. Admitadley, it doesn't display exactly the same as IE normally displays but it is very similar and completely usable.
Microsoft are clearly targetting specific browsers which I think is very wrong! What about people who can't use IE because of having old hardware (and hence use a less resource intensive browser), the 'wrong' OS or disabled users who rely on browsers like BLynx???
Surely these users should be allowed to eXPerience the 'joys' of MSN. If Microsoft truely believe that you can only really appreciate how good MSN is with IE, then have a disclaimer appear at the top of the page when a so called 'non-complient' browser accesses your website but don't stop people accessing altogether!!!
Make no mistake only by reading this book can you fully understand what this man achieved.
Firstly as far as history documents he had no formal training. He built clocks that were superior by orders of magnitude. And in order to achieve this he had to invent many of the components from scratch. I'm sure many of you will be surprised to know that this guy even invented the ball bareing in an atempt to make his clocks more friction free. Only when you read the book do you really understand the impact this man has had on modern living.
I saw the BBC documentary and I have read this book and I can assure you that the book is far more interesting. While I agree with Timothy that there should have been more detail (not really a critisism for a book to want you needing more) it is a really fascinating account of the race to discover an accurate method for calculating longitude.
Go into Borders bookstore on Tottenham Court Road and you can get all of those and Slackware 7, which I bought last weekend!
It's not as big a deal as many of you are making out. People have been doing this for a while now. Did any of you check out the link? There are some excellent examples of JavaScript games here. Check out Art Run (Out Run clone) in Netscape. Truly amazing when you consider it's just JavaScript and Layers (note: I have only tried this in the Windows version).
Anyway don't get annoyed at these guys they're just having a bit of fun and learning the capabilities of the various technologies.
I doubt this is slowing down the Mozilla development. If anything it is probably speeding it up because only when you start doing really obscure things with a piece of software do you find out the limitations and bugs.
If you don't agree with what they are doing, remember that most of these guys are just working on Mozilla in thier spare time; they are under no obligation to do "Proper" work on Mozilla. If you don't like it maybe you should start helping out the Mozilla effort yourself rather than just complaining. (Unless you already are a Mozilla developer! ;-).
Anyway that's just my two cents.
ESR believes passionately in Open source and I see nothing wrong with that. Why do you mock someone how has worked so hard for the Linux community! And anyway I think you'll find he runs Red Hat.
Sorry to be pedantic but if you actually read the Yahoo article it specifically says, "The new combined company, to be called Corel...." and anyway wouldn't that be Corel-Inprise-Borland?
I really like SGI. They really are very helpful to the Linux community. They have now released two great things to Open Source and they have such a respected name that they are adding credibility to the whole movement. I hope they keep up the good work!
