If Windows became open-source, I'd bet that within a few years it might actually become a usable system. At the very least, if the source was released (all of it, not just pseudo-open-source), then projects like WINE would be greatly helped along. Imagine how fast WINE development would take off if they didn't have to feel around in the dark.
So, while I probably wouldn't use Windows if it became open-source, I would be very pleased because I'd be able to run MS Office under Linux using WINE. (Eventually)
Although, perhaps the ears have a DMA-style direct link to memory, so that the conversation being listened to can simply be "recorded" and recalled later.
It would be interesting to see if they could not only listen to a conversation, but participate thoughtfully while sight-reading a piece.
