  1. Dual channel Rambus test on Intel Tests Show PC133 SDRAM Bests RDRAM · · Score: 1

I am definately not a Rambus lover, G-d knows I just had to spend a fortune on some Rambus RAM. I wanted to go 933, could not wait for i815, and needed an extremely stable solution for my workstation. I ended up with an Intel Or840 mainboard, 256 megs of RDRAM, and a P3-933. This thing is rock stable but cost a small fortune (the ram cost more than the CPU).

RAMBUS ram is completely out of control when it comes to price. It's nearly impossible to track down (if you're building your own system), and I can't see it competing well against dual channel SDRAM solutions that are due out soon. If a single channel configuration with 800mhz RDRAM can't beat out a PC133 solution, there's no way a two channel RDRAM solution will beat DDR SDRAM.

The big problem we run into is system stability. Call me crazy, but I simply can't compromise by going to a VIA chipset anytime in the future to avoid RDRAM. I've seen too many problems with them in the past, and I simply can't take the chance on it. I need stable machines at my shop, otherwise my life is miserable (plenty of Lusers here!)

Intel's primary reason for sticking with Rambus is the amount of money they've made off of Rambus stock. I don't expect them to abandon it anytime soon. The big question is whether or not we'll see a dual channel SDRAM solution coming out of Intel.

What's really pissing me off is that Rambus is going to make money regardless of the memory technology. They are winning lawsuits against DDR SDRAM manufacturers, and it looks like there won't be a stick of ram produced that won't have a royalty fee going to the big R. Can you smell antitrust?

  2. Anyone remember Coleco's atari expansion kit? on Playstation Emulation On The Dreamcast · · Score: 1

This reminds me so much of something that was available for the Colecovision (the console and not the Adam) many years ago. Coleco's unit had an expansion port on the front, and they came out with a device that would play Atari 2600 games on the system. As I recall (I was probably 6 or 7 years old at the time) there was a lawsuit but ultimately the device was allowed to be sold (I know since I bought one). I wonder if the same result will occur here. Bleem so far has been successful in fighting off Sony in the courts for the PC version. Apparently the business model for the Bleemcast product is a bit different. Customers will purchase an access key disc which would then allow games associated with that disc to be played. So they'll be making revenue by providing access to specific psx games. That could be trouble, especially from the publishers who may demand a royalty. So we'll have to see. Frankly Bleem on the PC was crap.. I haven't tried any recent builds, but none of my favorites would run on it.

  3. This is not a mandatory program on ReplayTV To Track Viewing Habits · · Score: 1

    Hi all,

Replay's representatives are active on the AV Science forum (www.avsforum.com) and have stated that this program is only for people already involved with the people meter system. Previously they were bypassing those homes with PTV devices. Replay customers will now be able to participate if they choose. You can see the forum threat at:<p>

Also I must say that these devices are fantastic. I bought a ReplayTV a few weeks ago and now I'm hooked.. I never miss anything, and I'd say I watch more tv than I ever did before. It was money well spent, and the Replay folks are very accessible (through the forum) and quick to answer questions.

  4. Mediafusion on Digital Power Line Gets Buried · · Score: 1

I'm interested in hearing what everyone has to say about media fusion, which is boasting about its upcoming technology (that hasn't been tested yet). I'm curious how they can get around some of these difficulties in interference.

..And another thing, they should make a version compatible with NT Terminal Server. It would make my life a lot easier right now.

  6. What's up with this monthly fee? on Sun introduces the "Sun Ray" · · Score: 1

If it's so darn cheap to make, why are they charging a monthly usage fee? If you ask me, I'd rather just buy the darn thing outright then have to do pay 10 bucks a month for the privlige. After all the only upgrading I'll be doing is on the thin client server and not the unit. Good idea, bad pricing scheme if you ask me.

Ack! I'm also at work and dying to get this thing running on my nt workstation. Are there any windows mirrors out there accepting connections?
