There's actually studies that show people who live with light pollution have higher occurrences of cancer.. but these studies are considered *less* reliable than experimental results, and rightly so.
The effect on wildlife is even more obvious.
Unfortunately, light pollution is still seen as an astronomer's problem and they're terrible at getting anyone interested in their problems.

You're fucking kidding right? Genetically altering a crop to be resistant to a pesticide that kills everything else? it had never been done before.. it had been considered *impossible* before they did it. That's like the most precise definition of non-obvious.
The holographic universe theory is a return to beautiful simplicity.. the concepts are simple enough to understand and that math is really not all that hard either.

I *said* I did that, 10 years ago.. on Slashdot.. in a conversation about ways to be obnoxious. If I was the kind of person who cared what random fucktards do on the Internet this AC would have been talking to the police a few years ago.
What's truly incredible about all this research is that for decades now we've known that infants can form stories about what a person is doing by observing them - even though the infant is incapable of performing the same activities, has never participated in those activities, etc.
Coming up with the experimental technique to reach this conclusion has been an education in itself.
I don't know why people keep saying this. LLNL were tasked with determining whether or not a big close asteroid could be diverted using nuclear weapons - that is, find out what the last resort is..
They found that indeed, the use of nuclear weapons could deflect or even destroy an incoming asteroid. Yes, long term deflection using less extreme methods are much more preferable, but should it be necessary to take out an asteroid that is detected so late that it is already on terminal approach, the PHDs who work on modelling nuclear explosions say it can be done.
So please, stop doomsaying, the experts say they are ready to nuke the sucker if that's what needs to be done.
Farmer A plants GM corn. Farmer B plants non-GM corn. Pollen from A's corn pollenates B's corn, which he uses part of as seed corn for the next season. B has now infringed Monsantos patent on the gene sequence of his crop. That's just evil on Monsanto's part.
Wrong.
See, this is what annoys me. Are you being naive or deliberately deceptive?
Here's how it really goes: Farmer B is buying Round Up - a pesticide - from Monsanto. Monsanto finds this odd as Farmer B doesn't seem to have a contract for Round Up Ready seed. Suspecting that Farmer B may be cleaning seed - an activity prohibited under Monsanto seed contracts to prevent passing on mutations which may reduce the effectiveness of Round Up Ready seed - they send out an investigator. He discovers that Farmer B is indeed using Monsanto Round Up Ready seed with Round Up, that is, he is knowingly violating Monsanto's patent. When asked where he got the seed from, he claims he doesn't know and it must have been cross-pollination.
The drooling public latch onto the last claim and ignore the rest. They go on to claim that Farmer B was using Monsanto seed without using Round Up - FALSE. They go on to claim that Farmer B was ignorant that he had been using Monsanto seed - FALSE, he was using Round Up on his crops, that'd be stupid if he didn't know his crops were Round Up Ready. They go on to claim that Farmer B never signed a contract for seed so he can't be bound by the patent - FALSE. They go on to claim that Monsanto is evil - fucking childish non-legal argument.
Oh, and then there's the seed cleaners.. independent contractors who aid farmers to violate their signed agreements with Monsanto by preparing the seed for replanting. Monsanto provides them with kits to test the seed to ensure it is not Round Up Ready, they refuse to use them because it reduces their business.
And look above in this thread for all the stupid arguments that have been presented over the years which NEVER DIE regardless of how easily they are discredited by just seconds of critical thought and getting your information from IMPARTIAL SOURCES.
Do you *not* understand that you're just demonstrating that you're a naive moron right now? How can I get this through to you?
Pick a subject you happen to know something about. Now imagine someone saying things that are nonsensical. For example, imagine someone saying that blue computers overheat more because they are full of goldfish. Just think about how stupid you sound.
No.. what I'm implying is that you're too ignorant of the technology to understand why the scare mongering is not only blatantly wrong but also outright stupid.
Allow me to make an analogy. I'm asking why you're not interested in the latest GPU developments and you're repeating "video games cause teen violence" stories from the mainstream media. Hint: they're morons.
Why? It's the most cutting edge technology in the world.. I don't know how you can call yourself a geek and not be at least marginally interested in it.
Yes, what annoys me is that the US news media keeps talking about China's plans to put humans on the Moon but they never provide any references. It's never "the Minister Of Space said," or some other quote from a respectable source, it's just stated as fact.
Whenever official Chinese sources are quoted as talking about a human spaceflight program they say their plans are to build their own LEO space station, not lunar missions. As far as I'm aware there has never been any official statement of a human lunar program - and currently they simply don't have the boosters to do it and so far they haven't announced any plans to build launch vehicles capable of taking humans to the Moon.
There's simply no Asian space race to the Moon, despite how much the US media wants one.
Obviously the author is going to say that, but you can take the opinion of anyone who codes a game in Java in the first place with a big fat hefty grain of sand. In any case, *whatever the reason*, not using Java would have gotten rid of that problem.
Yeah, they might even enshrine fair use as a right.. rather than merely as a "defense" to a civil lawsuit as it is in the US.
I thought TV Tropes was being banned because you can waste *days* reading that website and end up destroying your vocabulary. ;)

The vast amounts of light pollution in cities means that those of us who live in them are more susceptible to cancer and other diseases.
And to think, all those astronomers were doing more than just whining.
Sigh. *read the settlement*.
This is exactly the same argument we had back when Google Books got their settlement. Will you never learn?
First of all, this only affects US citizens.

More important: the farmer was using Roundup on Roundup-resistant crops. There's a patent on *that* and he was knowingly violating it.
Where he got the Roundup-resistant crops is *irrelevant* to that particular patent.

and with good reason
He didn't provide any good reason.. he provided the nonsense scare mongering bullshit that people have been peddling for years.
No.. what I'm implying is that you're too ignorant of the technology to understand why the scare mongering is not only blatantly wrong but also outright stupid.

Anyone who enters a password to decrypt a disk they haven't already imaged belongs on a prime time cop tv show.

I'm not complaining about it looking bad, mind you; I'm just surprised that it can't run on a Pentium 1 with all its settings turned up to full.
exactly, that's what happens when you write code in Java. I'm not saying you can't write fast Java code, it just takes more effort.
Dude, I play Minecraft singleplayer so I really don't care about the servers.
That said, if the server is anything like the client I can see why it can't handle the load. Don't write games in Java idiots.
