    And how are the CC# stored ? Plain text ? Encrypted ? If this is plain text then your security is null, as this is a really weak point. Encrypting the database is the ultimate protection, one that protects you even if your whole system is cracked.

    Process the CC# thru PGP before storing it... the hackers may get the encrypted CC#, but won't be able to do anything with it.

    If they had stored the CC# in encrypted form in their database, no hacker could have stolen the number. They could have downloaded 300000 encoded # by hacking into the system, but would have been stuck with unusable datas (cracking a PGP key is more difficult than hacking NT, you see)

    Not really, some areas have higher or lower male/female ratio. The thing goes like 4/6 or the opposite in some cities... having 50% more women than men in a area (which is what a 4/6 ratio really is) put men in good conditions to find someone :-).

    Well the "funny" thing is that only the worst US food chains have settled in Europe, mostly McDonald / KFC / Pizza hut. I guess it is mostly because they fill a gap in the "very cheap" food market.

    Sure it doesn't have the marketshare Bill was hoping to get, but for some specific task it is still the only kid in the block. PalmOS is more efficient for basic work (scheduling/notes/etc..) but when you want to make some specific apps or a little color/sound, there's nothing else that a good WinCE thing. Try making a good custom database with pictures on a palm V and its 2 MB of memory.... beside, having a stripped down Win32 API also helps porting.

    If you happen to be French, relax, France has extradition treaty with the US but they don't do it with French citizen. OK, you won't be able to visit US during your life, but there's always a McDonald around that will taste just like it (yuck !!)

    They are suing them in a French court - not a US one. French law is much less fucked up as the US one when it comes to patents and trademarks (though sometimes an ignorant judge can make some really stupid rulling)

    Speaking of color PDA, did anybody tried the Casio Cassiopea E105 ? It is a killer hardware (65536 color TFT backlit screen, Audio out, 32 MB + CompactFlash slot, MP3, etc...) but it runs Wince... I would prefer to buy a Palm but the idea of playing MP3 on my PDA is more than tempting...

    Everyday, write an email to Amazon... cc to all their mailboxes. If 10000 people do that everyday, their whole customer suport system will be dead, and they'll loose other customers as well. The task could even be automated... how about a complain every hour ?

    The funny thing is that some of the protesters where european - because being heard in Europe isn't enough, If you want your ideas to travel around the world, it's easier if the TV that does the images recording is an American One - Because for so many things the US dictates the world:

    No, it is because the American medias have so little info about foreign events. They found that the everage American don't give a damn about what happen outside of its country (when he knows that there IS something outside of the US). Same thing can be said about non-US movies in US, etc...

    Well it is even easier since the music on Audio DVD is not compressed. With Video DVD the compression that occurs make that, if you rip the output of a player, you have to compress back gain, introducing some quality loss. But with Audio DVD there is not such problem. Even if this thing has a 10e7 bit RSA key, it will be really easy to rip.

    The only good way I see is to make some sound card with crypto in the DAC : the audio stream would go cyphered there, and the only way left to rip would be to digitize back the sound, creating some quality loss in the process. Yet I doubt sound card manufacturers are going to ask people more money to implement this (expensive) scheme.

    Good programmers design a solid and secure protocol first, then write the app they have in mind. The problem is that most programmers start the app first, then build the protocol around it as the app grows. They get buggy, overly complex and unsecure protocols... that they can't get rid of because everyone is using their app by the time they realise their mistake.

    How about STMicroelectronics ? Open your computer : you'll be surprised by how many chips in it are actually made by a French-Italian manufacturer. ST also manufactures chips for nVidia, Cyrix, AMD, etc...

    Actually I reported that a French team made some 20 nanometers transistors a month ago but of course it didn't make it on Slashdot, as of course only the US can make innovations, and anything else doesn't exist.

    I was only kidding about BP. As for Delphi being "as good" as VC++ I disagree strongly. 2 clics are enough to put a client or server socket in a program, 2 more clicks and you have HTTP client functions too, etc... (plus, having ready made components reduce bug density) Nothing come close to this level of productivity. Plus, the widgets looks great in Delphi : have you seen the ugly interface of the Napster client ? obviously they could have benefitted from Delphi.

    As for the server side, I agree VC++ is as good as Delphi, since the UI is not important at all.

    I hope you don't trust the variables which come from the outside. Otherwise, your application becomes completely insecure.

    Well, the variables are not transmistted in plain text of course.

    PHP 4.0 sessions do not store all global variables, because this would create many problem cases. Just imagine that you have an instantiated class. The session module will serialize it, and will try to reinstantiate it, but the current script does not contain the class definition.

    I agree too, but I find the way to register session variables overly complex and confusing in PHP4. Something like a single function register($var1,$var2,$var3,) would be neat.

    You are probably refering to the wash_dishes(var dirtydishes:stuff) function ? It has been obsoleted by doallchores function, much easier to use. Of course you can replace all of this with 465768 lines of pickfork(fork **&*&*item) in C ;-)

    Well actually from the doc it looks like it is not so seamless, as you have to register the variables you want to keep in the session. I have a 10 lines include files that hash an array into a single variable that is passed as cookie or as a CGI variable and that does the same, yet is easier to use (all the persistent variables are in the array, so a simple loadvar/savevar function does the trick)

    No open source is needed, we just need a clean spec on the used protocol. Then everyone can start its on client/server software. On the other hand I hope they have a GOOD protocol, because when things grow they'll need to have clustering of servers, good security, etc...

    Well if they used Delphi this client would be already finish, almost bug free and have a better user inferface. Why all people insist on using C++ for Winblows programming ? Masochism ?
