  1. Where is Dell and Compaq getting performance data? on Crusoe vs. Dell And Compaq · · Score: 1
Are they building machines with the Crusoe chip and benchmarking them, using machines built by transmeta or just pulling numbers out of the air? I don't mean to sound like I'm slamming them for not building around a new chip, but without proper benchmark numbers theres no way to tell if one brand of chip is faster/slower than another.

BTW: Don't bother posting MHz numbers. A Pentium II @ 450Mhz != PPC G4 @ 450MHz, its what you do with the cycles that counts

  2. WTF? on Mitnick Ordered Off Lecture Circuit · · Score: 1
She [The Judge] said that she thought Mitnick would be unable to earn anything above minimum wage.

    WTF?

Granted the guy is a convited felon on parole, but the point of parole is to keep people from commiting more crimes. Not making them poor. If he can make a living without using a phone, or an ATM or a computer (I'd be dead in a week) More power to him!

  3. Re:Fit four years into one? Thats going to be toug on ArsDigita University · · Score: 1

I agree, they plan to teach calculus in a month for people who haven't taken it before. When I was in college, it took me a good 2 years. (Differential, Integral, 3-Dimensional, and Differential Equations) not to mention other math courses just to hang on to the basics of advanced mathematics. Even if you just teach Differntial and Integral, 6 days a week 12 hours a day that will be killer. Fear for those who fall behind.

  4. Toss it in on US PlayStation 2 To Have A Modem & Hard Drive? · · Score: 1

Consoles ALWAYS sell at a loss. ALWAYS. Sony would toss in their mom if they thought that they'd make more money. If a Web browser will make people use thier $29.99 a month (I'm guessing) internet sevice, toss it in. If they can sell MP3 that can only be played on the PS2, toss it in. This isn't about mindshare or games, its about money. Companies are willing to lose in the short term if they think they'll win in the long term. However, it doesn't always work. (*ahem* iopener *ahem*)

  5. A nice thing to say but... on AOL Snuffs Napster-Workalike Gnutella · · Score: 1

Executives make these decisions, not the people who work as sysadmins, DBAs, Webmasters, etc. If everyone did as you suggested, not only would the execs not understand what was going on, they would just hire new people who know less at a lower salary. Then they would pat themselves on the back for a good cost cutting measure. Companies run on profits, not platitudes like goodness and freedom. I don't like it, but thats how it works.

  6. Expectations... on What the Linux Community Needs to Grok · · Score: 1

People expect computers to work like TV's, phones, cars and light bulbs. Is this reasonable? Remember Linux has only been around since '91 (i'm guessing, I wasn't there) and Windows 95 since 1995. Cars, lightbulbs and phones are close to 100 yrs old technology wise (dont bother flaming me over the exact date) and TV's are around 50. I think that people should give the tech community a break (esp. Linux community). In another 40 yrs come back and complain if your computer can't JUST connect to the internet (or whatever they have) or JUST recognize the lastest thingamabob. People have to be pushed to THINK and READ! If you're one of those that doesn't want to think and read and explore, your problem is MUCH MUCH deeper than Linux vs. Microsoft.

  7. Re:Who needs this? on CA Announces Program Ports to Linux · · Score: 1

    Can't we just use both?

Who here can really say that security on their box is sooo good that a Trojan horse or virus can't come in an wipe out files or trash the system? Who can say they never make a mistake here or there. Its all fine and good to trash some newbies (it not, but I have bigger fish to fry in this rant) but when it come down to it, there are people our there spending their whole time trying to come up with new virii (see Chinese Virus thread) If you don't want to give Computer Associates your money (or your company's money) for an anti-virus product...Don't. But don't discourage them because our Linux ego is too big to ask for a little help.

Linux is NOT perfect. It is a work in progress. If we keep discouraging companies from writing software because it "offends" us, Linux will die.
