  1. leftists don't value the individual on Why Are So Many Nerds Libertarians? · · Score: 1

Leftist ideas don't value the individual like Libertarian ideas do.
Leftists often jump on the civil liberties bandwagon, but rarely the privacy bandwagon.

Most nerds are loners and/or outcasts in some form...with this we've learned that groups and group-think are dangerous to us. Authority has always been the enemy of the nerd. Most of us just want to be left alone.

Leftists want to get everyone involved and on the same page, this is contrary to the nerd-world-view. Most "nerd libertarians" I know don't even vote. They don't want to participate for a variety of reasons. We'll engage in debate in person or online, but like hell if we're going to stop playing around to vote for some dickhead who doesn't represent or stick up for the nerd.

Leftists and Rightytighties tend to know what's best for everyone else. They're always trying to uneven the playing field in some way. Whether it's affirmative action, welfare, corporate welfare, campaign finance reform, etc.

Libertarians openly "don't know" what is best for everyone else. This is generally not viewed as a strength, but it should be. Sure libertarians are weird, it's the party of freaks...freaks with very different ideas on how the world should be, but they all agree they don't want someone else's views forced upon them.

The left isn't that different from the right, both want authority, control and influence over how others behave and spend their money. F-them both!

third parties do not do well because we are conditioned by the media to believe we only have two options. AND the two parties have made it very difficult to have more parties.

politicans do what benefits politicans. not what benefits the people. which is why we have pork barrel politics and the politicans have no incientive to change it. we may all hate it, but no one lobbies to put an end on lobbying.

I have a t68i, and I can't wait until my contract is up in a month or two so I can renew and get a Nokia phone. (So I don't have to pay full price for the phone)

I bought the t68i based on features before actually testing the phone.

    1) It was slow until I got a refurbished model which is faster.
    2) The microphone is WAYYY too sensative, nothing but background noise! My girlfriend hates it when I'm in a car or airport.
    3) Bluetooth-schmootooth, there's nothing THAT cool about it yet...sure there's a few tricks, and maybe sync-ing address books is all right...but there's not enough practicality in it yet.
    3) The antenna is horrible, you put a finger on it and the strength goes down a notch or two. And that's not just because it's GSM...I've used my phone in 10 different cities by now...some have better signal than others, but the antenna is putrid.
    4) Not a rugid phone. Anytime it has ever been dropped, I'm worried I'm out of luck!
    5) Anytime I go out of range, it takes more than 5 minutes to re-establish -- it's faster to turn the phone off and turn it back on -- what kind of crap is that?

I can't wait to get a nokia phone again, I've been searching eBay -- but I want to test the phone first.

It might be feature-rich, bluetooth, and a good battery -- but as a phone IT SUCKS!

  5. i tape them off the radio on Ask Metallica About Napster · · Score: 1

A few of my thoughts: I used to tape Metallica songs off of the radio and play them over and over. I see mp3s as the same way.

If they want, I'll delete my mp3s and not listen to them. I'm not going to buy their album if I do or do not have their songs on mp3.

Should I destroy the tapes I have when I taped them off of the radio? It is the same concept. Or what about if a friend makes me a copy? Do they really think they're going to stop all of that? I'm a musician too, and I don't want to be ripped off, or rip anyone else off. But mp3's are just convienient, and they do not hurt their business as musicians. They still have a lot of turn out at their concerts right? They are still selling records correct?

They are not "losing" money because I listen to them on mp3. I would not buy the album anyway because I don't like it *that much*. (on the contrary.. I have a slew of Bad Religion mp3s, and I buy anything they put out.)

I wrote a short article on it the other day, located here: http://www.reject.org/soapbox-mp3.html.

  6. Re: Free speech on Battlefield Earth · · Score: 4
Suddenly "everyone" (90%) is opposed to free speech, and people like Scientologists should go get themselves buried under 6 feet dirt.

Calling for a boycott, or telling people "don't spend your money on this movie" is not an oppression of speech. Making a movie is "free speech" and telling people to see or not to see it is also "free speech".

So most of us think Scientology is a load of horse poopie. We like ranting about how they take people's money. We're not against free speech.

  7. isolation is a little far fetched on LonelyNet (Part Two) · · Score: 1

I think the Internet is a place for people who would normally be insecure and/or lonely to harbor. The Internet doesn't cause it.

That's like saying that people who watch soap operas lead lonely lives.

I'm on the Internet all day at my job, and some at home. Then I go out and live my life like I always have. I wouldn't say I've isolated myself more -- I've made a lot of good contacts on the Internet. It's just a new way of communication. Now for shy/lonely people, it might be a way to express themselves easier -- is that wrong, does that make them more lonely? No, if anything it might help them not feel so out of touch?

Everyone is different though. Personally I haven't seen a pattern.

  10. Dogma on End of Some Days, Beginning of Others · · Score: 1

The humor vs. serious is intentional.
If this movie was all about making serious points and pointing out short-comings in religion (mainly Christianity -- Catholicism) the turn out would have been smaller and it would have been deemed more offensive. If you throw a bunch of humor into the mix 1) many people won't even "get" the ontological onslauts and undertones 2) more people will see it and more will return to see it again -- a good comedy can be watched over and over again 3) it makes it easier to digest for some folks 4) the whole "what's life about" *honk* -- c'mon...some people take life way too seriously, i think that held a lot of meaning throughout the movie.

i'm a big kevin smith fan so i'm a little biased, clerks will always be his jewel, but dogma brought on an intelligent humor that is lacking in many comedies [and in all sitcoms].

after walking out of the theater i could tell a lot of people just didn't understand what it was all about...but same holds true with the south park movie... some people will never 'get it'.. and that's what makes it even funnier for the people that do understand what's going on.

Not all lifestyle choices are equal == of course not...A lawyer leads a different lifestyle from a social work who leads a different lifestyle from a plumber who leads a different lifestyle from a politican who leads a different lifestyle from a drug dealer -- okay the politican-drug dealer probably wasn't a good example.

Allow me to beat your stereotype.
I'm a nonconformist. I lead a good and clean lifestyle, and I have a good job.

My hair colour might change every few months but it does not make me a bad person.

"All choices are equal" has nothing to do with Littleton. That's where you keep missing the point, these kids were "different" but it wasn't their differences that made them into monsters.
They obviously had other things going on. It wasn't because of how they dressed or the music they listened to or the video games they played that made them pull the trigger.
What if they were jocks or preppie kids? Most of us agree this would be handled different, schools would not point at jocks and preppies as being bad kids and they wouldn't ask them if they watched violent things on television. But because these kids were different, members of society including yourself point at people who are different and think they are bad too.
Just because Hitler was a psycho doesn't make all Germans psycho automatically.

Stereotyping bites us in the "*ss" more than ethical relativism.

  14. conformity does nothing on Hope In The Hellmouth: Looking Ahead · · Score: 3

So conformity is a good thing? A one nation world? A one Operating System computing platform?
That is what your arguement is sounding like.

    Einstein was "different".
    Socrates was "different".
    Jimi Hendrix was "different".
    Linux Torvaldes is "different". (grin)

The problem with stereotyping the way people act with the way people look is that there will always be people who break the stereotype.

What does conformity accomplish? If everything is the same -- what changes -- where do new trends come from -- where do we evolve mentally and as a society?

There should always be a conflict , someone rocking the boat and changing the norm. Stagnation accomplishes nothing. If it was not for being "different", new ideas would not be as plentiful.

You can't single out "suspects" of who is going to strike next. It could be anyone, it could be an honors student who snapped because he didn't study for a test and failed it and it ruined his GPA. It could be a kid who has mental problems. It could be a teacher whose wife just left him. It could be a principal who just can't take it anymore. Looking for people because of how they look is making the innocent out to be guilty. Last time I checked in the United States the law was "innocent until proven guilty". (I can't speak for other countries)

I see the weak point you are trying to make that if you dress differently then you should expect criticism. And I think the problem here is lack of respect....if I dress differently why should you disrespect me? Because I am different from you? That is no reason to disrespect someone, that just causes more problems and seperation.

The attitude is not "people who look and act differently are superior" no one is claiming superiority, all anyone wants is equality. That's like saying defending women's liberation is being "anti-male and pro-female domination". We should have the right to express ourselves in any manner (which does not hurt others) and not be condemned for it. The attitude is not "we are better"; the attitude is "you are not any better/worse".

  17. happiness is a pretty perverse movie on Best Movie and TV Show of 1998 · · Score: 1

I was rather disappointed with Happiness... It's pretty fucked up. It was an "objective" view of child molesters and perverts. How is this artful? I mean, it was pretty nasty to see a movie where part of it revolved around a middle school child learning how to masturbate and his father fucks his friends when they are over.

I didn't "care" or "sympathize" for the child molester, I mean, he was a pretty messed up guy who needed help (or a gunshot to the head).

Why glorify perversity and why call it "art". I could urinate on a block of wood and call it "art".

I enjoyed welcome to the dollhouse, I found it "daring" but Happiness was just beyond the limits of good taste. I felt like leaving as soon as that 12 year old boy spit up sperm at the breakfast table.

Who am I to judge someone's *art* though huh?

If that movie is art, the "Meet The Feebles" (a funny muppet porno movie) is the greatest piece of art ever.

I just think these movies are degrading to humanity, should we say it's okay to be a pervert and to like children? Is that the message we are trying to get across?
