  2. Access control already solved on Internet Printer Protocol · · Score: 1

As far as I can tell, one of the big reasons IPP uses HTTP as the transport protocol was so that it didn't have to worry about access control. You can just use the existing access control mechanisms in HTTP to control who accesses the printer, so you could easily set up username based, certificate based, IP based, etc.

  3. Not Lame on Internet Printer Protocol · · Score: 2

IPP has a lot more potential than simple lpd. For example, you would be able to query paper trays and direct your output there, rather than relying on the sysadmin to set up specific queues for each possible option the user might want.

Also, having a single standard means that you won't need to install netatalk, samba _and_ lpr to be able to talk to any printer you want. Ideally, everyone would support IPP so you'd only need one thing.

There's surely more and I've not read the standard, but iirc the author of LPRng was involved in standardization, so it should fix annoyances people have with lpr.

  4. marraige of minors on Internet Censorship in Utah Schools & Libraries · · Score: 1

In many states, there's nothing wrong with minors being married. Indiana law (http://www.law.indiana.edu/codes/in/31/31-7-2-2.h tml) says that you can be married with parental consent under the age of 18 in some cases. In many states, you may always get married at 17 with parental consent. (MN and FL appear to be 16.)

"put binaries in the default location"?

Which default location do you mean? Many programs default to /usr/local/bin... does it make any sense for a dist to do this?

  6. Am I missing something? on 8MB upgrade hack for Palm V · · Score: 2

I think you are missing something, Bruce. Go out and buy that Everex, and use it for a while. Afterwards, tell us which you like more.

PDAs are something you can't judge by hardware alone because it doesn't matter that much. I haven't used up the 2 MB in my upgraded PPro. I can't _ever_ imagine using up 48MB. More important to me are battery life and overall usability.

I haven't used a CE machine myself, but I know people who do. They don't use it nearly as much as I do, because it's too slow, isn't as usable, or sucks up batteries. These are important characteristics for something you're going to carry around with you all the time!

I know one person who has a CE machine with keyboard, and still carries a pen and paper everywhere. He updates the CE with new appts and stuff during downtime at his desk.

(On a different note, I think the main reason 3com is taking it slow upping the memory on these things is working the OS to the point you don't need a defrag program if you have 8MB.)

  7. Life without Word on LA Weekly: The Lonliness of Linux · · Score: 1

I guess I'm the exception to your poll. Although I'm probably quite proficient with Word (using tons of wps over the years will do that to you), I haven't used it regularly in... 7 or 8 years. Nowadays, I'd say I open up word and do things in it about once every 2 or 3 months. I use WP/Unix more often, say once every 2 weeks or so. It's nice working within a Unix shop.

(FWIW, while my fiancee's machine has word on it, it also has Linux and WP8 and she's been transitioning over to that and LaTeX.)

  8. Practical uses for VRML on Platinum Tech. Planning OSS Web 3D Tools? · · Score: 1

Well, I work in a large CAD company, so I'm not the typical audience. But it is useful for our customers to be able to export VRML so that they can easily show people models in progress, without the viewer needing to start up Unigraphics (or needing to have a license for it in the first place).

  9. Image Packs and patterns against each other on Yet Another New Image Format · · Score: 1

Naturally, this will depend severely on things like the size of the images.

I tried this experiment with 2400+ small bmps we have here (average size, 1k or so). The tar.gz was about 1/20th the size of the directory of GIFs. This won't always be the case, I'd guess. Since the images were so small, the GIF directory probably had a higher proportion of redundant info (ie, 2400+ headers) than a normal set of images.

  10. Think it's Steve's fault on BellAtlantic ADSL absurdity · · Score: 2

Having worked tech support before, it's pretty clear to me that Bell Atlantic isn't supporting Macs other than the iMac because they don't have enough knowledge in-house to train their techs to do the installs, write docs for users, etc. This is pretty standard.

I'm sure that if Steve didn't go off on this whole "My Mac is just like any other Mac" he could have gotten service. For example, by explaining that he's capable of handling all client-side issues and giving them the information they need, he'd probably get a response like "Great. We can't help you with problems unless you show they're on our end, but we'll hook you up." They already do stuff like that with third-party ethernet cards.

Instead, Steve went off frothing at the mouth and tried to force them to support his machine at the same level as an iMac, because it's the exact same thing. Is it surprising that a confrontational customer is going to get blown off?
