So now your issue isn't with speech, it's with the SCALE of that speech?
Woah, stop right there. Lots of assumptions considering I haven't said anything else in this thread, but you know, since I said something you disagree with, I must have obviously contradicted myself. Aggressive are we?
Show me the text in the 1st amendment that grants private companies the right to commit mass libel via proxy in order to hijack the democratic process.
All private entities initially dismissed the Internet. Hell, when Jobs visited PARC he didn't even get the point of networking. Seemed trivial and dumb to him. What does that have to do with selling millions of personal consumer products?
It isn't just anybody's game, it is anybody's game from month to month. 6-8 Months ago, everyone wanted to make an iPhone app. Now everyone wants to make an Android app. The truth is, the cellphone market is insane.
They will look at Oracle and say they didn't get the code (because libreOffice is quickly taking that) and they didn't get the people (because they all split) so what did they get for all that money?
How are they not getting the code and more importantly how are libreOffice taking it?
Or older users who don't want their previous user experience ripped out from under them. They just want the same thing with support for new applications and hardware.
If it were any other company I would agree, but Digium have done a lot and deserve any good karma that anyone wants to send their way. They seem to genuinely "get" FOSS and haven't turned into a MBA driven POS itching for the day they can cash in.
They have always, honestly answered any questions that I've had and when I reached the point where it looked like Asterisk wasn't the solution I needed, they pointed me to the right direction instead of trying to sell me vaporware and a service contract. They may not have gotten me as a customer, but they earned my respect and I'll happily point others towards their offerings.
Supply and demand. There is only one Photoshop and if I need it, I need it. You can extort what you want and sic me if I don't pay. There are thousands upon thousands of alternatives to Metallica and I don't need Metallica to do my day to day work.
I think the parent's point isn't that AP is good or bad, just that this doesn't sound like a good idea.
AP is making the same stupid mistake that others have made over and over again. At a 20% cut they don't want, whats coming to them, they want to be the App Store of News.

Wow, this is like the 4th Drupal book review on Slashdot in less than a year. I've never tinkered with it, but I've yet to talk to anyone who has had any problem getting it up and running, let alone needed a book. How about a few book reviews on something we aren't familiar with?
The west in general isn't going to get "smarter". The west in general have always had to slink on their bellies and make deals with the devil to keep their standard of life going as it is. There are two big differences here. The first is that the US isn't calling the shots (so it all feels weirdly familiar, yet totally foreign). The second is that no one can militarily push China around. Before the US could point guns at a (generally) middle eastern oil state and grimace while paying slightly higher prices. The process wasn't pleasant, but it worked out for both parties. China has its own (sovereign) resources. In the end this isn't going to be pleasant, not by a long shot.
Uncle Steau -- Now gets why BBC news always portrays China as the once and future king, it hurts less that way.
LUGs are an under-rated resource that are pretty common, yet almost never mentioned. I've only attended a few recently, but you can generally post to your local list and get a friendly response in no time. Though I've gone to a few boring meetings, I can't say I was never offended or talked down. Novices are welcome and there is always the off chance of a recruiter being present (that always quiets the know-it-all). All in all, they are a healthy thing that Mac and Win really can't brag about.
In the end I guess it is kind of like a cult or religion. We have the weekly bible study, the prayer list, and even show up on college campuses to evangelize and spread the good word.
I've tried getting into it (as in contributing) and it can be a very painful experience. Granted, it is mostly caused by kids who (sometimes, unwittingly,) poison the well with privately owned content.
I'm not saying that the GPL isn't compatible with assets (I'm sure there are a thousand examples where it works just fine), but being 100% certain that all of your content was actually created by the jack-leg who submits it can be a real, real pain. Just from reading boards, I've noticed that some projects even go so far as to white-room asset creation. This can be unbearably painful, though not as bad as audio, where you might as well give up before you start, because something somewhere isn't going to be compatible. I've seen some projects just ask for sheet music.
Honestly, if I were to go back in and try to contribute, I'd have a video of creating every single texture and every single mesh; unedited. It is the only way to get in without this huge shadow of doubt over you. On second though, I'd just contribute code, it is much safer.
nothing to do other than stay home all day when you're not working
On the plus side it is lots of time to hone your skills. The older you get the harder the harder it is to have time to make use of. For me, more time means I have a better resume.
As far as starbucks and whole foods go, I can get what I need at the farmers market and stop by the local coffee shop, even time to chat with locals if I wish.
The only downside is crappy internet access. I won't lie, at a certain point you better get creative. Fortunately wireless is getting better every day.
All in all, it is what you make of it, so long as you are willing to make something of it. Also there are opportunities that will simply fall in your lap (or get thrust upon you) that you will never get to touch elsewhere. I'm not going to get stopped on the streets of San Francisco to be asked if the specs for municipal wifi are a good idea or not or if I have a better all around solution.
So now your issue isn't with speech, it's with the SCALE of that speech?

Yes, but NYT isn't handing candidates millions of dollars to flood hundreds of media outlets.
The problem isn't one private entity giving their one word, but one private entity speaking as if it were a thousand voices in a thousand places.
On the playground we called it cheating.

"OK, guys. The material hasn't changed much this year, just the activation codes."
Or older users who don't want their previous user experience ripped out from under them. They just want the same thing with support for new applications and hardware.
Meh, as long as you have a hunk of meat and a fishing pole, both tasks are the same.

They've been Scientology hell haven't they?
Too bad I'll forever wonder how System Shock 2 would have done if it weren't canceled.

The price has really come down, we aren't talking about putting a shuttle up there.
On the list of crazy, there are better entries. http://www.copenhagensuborbitals.com/index.php

I'd say, not screwing around with the basic idea of packet switching is a good start.
I'm thinking the NRA wouldn't agree with that.

Q: But this control extends to every aspect of the product - even to opening the box. The experience of opening the box is designed by Steve Jobs.
Yep, Cult of Mac. Must be nice for Apple to have their own Hit Parader/Tiger Beat, I guess.

"If you use your computer screen as your TV, you are outside of the "norm" and don't count."
Except the thousand of people watching Hulu at work right now. For a lot of people it is TV.

Then the next Newton needs to hurry up and get here.
Not sure if I'd call it rock cleaning, more like writing the ultimate rock cleaning guide.
